For my love for antique French hats today I introduce you a "Thibet" hat.
thibet-5-jpg.305930

A high class creation for a high social class.
thibet-6-jpg.305931

What characterizes the hat is the composition of the felt which is a mixture of various and precious wools.
Made by Jean Bourrel's company, it appears on the label as JB, who has built many hats for French quality brands as a subcontractor.
thibet-4-jpg.305932

I have other hats in my Thibet collection in black and the sheen of the felt, evidently in wool, has always made me think of a special composition.
thibet-interno-jpg.305933

I asked Fleur of Penumbra Hats her opinion and here there is the reply: "The website mentions the hats were made of merino, and while some of the older, now extint breeding lines of merino sheep certainly had very fine wool with a lustrous sheen, the felt of the Thibet hat looked and felt different to me than other Bourrel hats I have handled. My guess is that the silky quality of the felt is the result of mixing merino with mohair from the angora goat - which would in turn explain the brand name "Thibet"!"
thibet-3-jpg.305934

These are the measurements of the "Thibet" hat made long before the Second World War. The raw brims are at 5.5 cm. ribbon is at 4 cm. and the high and imposing crown is 13.5 cm open. The size is a full 57.
thibet-2-jpg.305935

Rare to find in these conditions these hats are a quality rarity!

Very nice, Daniele and in excellent condition (like the bowler I found). One day there's never a mention of Thibet and now two in one day!

A lucky find this one. A Panizza was part of the latest Dutch-Italian hat-exchange, but the exchange was lopsided, because there was one missing. This one came up.
Panizza Super (M4 is apparently the model) in a size 60. Heathered felt in a grey/sand colour and an underwelted brim at 5,5cm and the crown 12cm at the center dent. Yes, the ribbon is awful even though it's called "fantasia".

It is true! To do them justice, it needs a few more photos of the Thibets I have in the closet, they have extremely rare felt and masterful workmanship. I must also remember to photograph some Mossant and Chapeu de France in homburg version without ribbon on the brims:)

A brand we're happy to see on a regular basis (as we should).
Borsalino Gulaela in Lupo colour or "wolf". Not a very common colour. This homburg is one of Borsalino's most common models and rightly so. Brim at 6cm and crown at 11cm. Weighs 128 grams. Mid to late fifties. Thanks to @Daniele Tanto for making it possible.

Three new beauties. Love the bowler and the Borsi.

Mallory Aristocrat Quality
Warm Pewter Felt
4 3/4 Crown as shaped - 5 1/2 Open
1 3/8 Antique Pewter Grosgrain Ribbon
2 1/2 brim with 3/8 grosgrain binding

Hat number 7 of the Mystery Hat Box Nine. This may very well be my favorite of the lot. I would guess this was Mallory’s take on the Whippet. And what a fine job they did! A lot to like about this hat... the color of the felt, ribbon and binding to the dimensions and crease... it all just works in my eyes. The manufacturing tag has this hat labeled at 7 1/4 however for whatever reason it as a perfect size 7 fit. Two more hats to come from the Mystery box. They will be hard pressed to outshine this Malloy.

Nice Knox, Joe. Wish I could find a mystery box like yours. Looking forward to the next two.

Stetson Premier Lancer made under license in Germany, so a Mayser production. Some photos are Stefans and some are mine.

It's got a Pork Pie look about it, but the brim is wider than a usual PP so just has to be worn down. Great bronze colour with a rather nice, wide green ribbon that enhances the bronze colour of the felt and vice versa.

Your hatogenicity is not restricted to brim widths only my friend, it continues to crown heights and shapes too! Nice addition Steve, it adds some diversity as well!

Good to see it in action, Steve. The sun brings out the great colour it has very well.
