The store Olson and Darelius at Lake and Nicollet must be Minneapolis. Olson being a Scandinavian name, and the only Lake and Nicollet that I know being in Minneapolis, places the store pretty surely in that city. Also Buhler being in Wisconsin nearby, it makes sense that that's where the hat was bought. It might be an interesting research subject to find out a little something about the store, for Minneapolitans who are into hats.

Thanks for the info Dan! Im going to try and do some research on the hat. I would be really interested to know what hatter actually made it. That might be a bit harder to find, but it would be very cool to learn about the store it came from.

Stetson Week-ender

From the 'bay for a few bucks... In adds the Stetson Week-ender was presented as the freetime alternative to the more dressy Whippet. The lightweight ("Zephyr weight") felt is very supple. The hat has a perforated circle on the top of the crown. The sweat is unreeded - I think I need to be careful not to ruin the stithes... Otherwise, this hat is a joy!

What do you al think about it's age? Second half of the 1940's?

Lake & Nicollet lies at the southern terminus of what is commonly referred to as Eat Street these days. There is no longer a physical intersection of the two streets, as the location is now covered by a supermarket parking lot.

Richman Brothers lightweight thin ribbon

5-1/2" x 2-3/4". Felt and dimensions similar to a Stratoliner but with bow turned open like older Westerns. I don't know the maker of the body for Richman Brothers Stores. Kashmir-Felt, not Kasmír finish like Champ.
Unfortunately Size 6-7/8.

I think mid 40s is correct. To my eye, there's something odd about the sweatband stitching on that Week-Ender. I can't help but wonder if that sweatband wasn't removed at some point and put back in without the original (cord) reed. It's also odd the way they punctured the liner. I can understand perforating the felt. But doing that to the liner (especially one as light and porous and attractive as that one) is very strange.

Well Ive been doing research all morning, and this is a tough one. I cant find ANYTHING on Olson and Darelius, but in my research Ive found that Nicollet Ave around 1900's-1930's was a very popular and bustling area with lots of stores. Ive found a good amount of old postcards and pictures of the intersection of Lake St and Nicollet Ave, but I was unable to spot any clothes stores or signs with the Olson & Darelius name. I even did extensive research at the Minnesota Historical Society's website. I was able to come up with a couple of possibilities. The hat could have come from a small store/shop that was not very big or popular and there is no photographic or written history about it. Another possibility is that the hat came from one of the stores inside The Syndicate Block building which housed Dry goods stores along with a Millinery shop. Another possibility is that the Olson in "Olson & Darelius" was a relative of Andrew Olson who was a well-known and successful merchant tailor and clothier of Minneapolis, Hennepin county. He had a shop at 235 Nicollet St in the late 1880's. It seems that he had the business into the 1900's. I couldnt find if the shop closed or if any of his relatives took over. So the next step would probably be to contact the Historical Society directly and ask them to look up Olson and Darelius on their end. Maybe they have information that is not listed online. I do know that based off of what ive read about the stores on Nicollet street at that time, this hat may not have been super expensive, but was very high quality. And 80-90 years later, it still is.

Thank You delectans! After looking at old pictures of this intersection back in its hay day, it makes me sad to see the intersection on google maps now. Its a K-Mart parking lot. What a shame.
