German Stetson Premier (Mayser) with soft fuzzy hair in beige-brown.
My guess is perhaps 1970's.
Now a wedding present for a good friend's wife.

Early 1970s is a possibility, but could equally be somewhere within the early to mid 60s era. The colour, style, felt, hat liner technicolor logo suggest that to me. Either way, a cool iconic rat pack type lid.

I stopped into Greely Hat Works and couldn’t help but make an off the shelf purchase.
Very cool shop with very nice employees!
They are a full custom operation but sell a lot of premade straws too. Off the shelf hats “have been used in photo shoots, etc.,” and I tried a couple I really liked, and left with a hare’s felt Western homburg that fit nearly perfectly until he steamed it to perfection for me!
Granite Grey with matching ribbon and bound edge. You can see a tack stitch here and there, but the most interesting part is that it appears shaped backwards from what I would normally do. That is to say the dent is lower in the back, and the brim dip is as well, but it’s very subtle and I know I’m going to enjoy this one!
I almost went with this little beaver topper but I think I made the right choice.

Looks great Jeff. I'm going to have to think a bit to understand your description of the shape though.

What I mean is that what I would normally consider a front-biased roll and dip is in the back of this hat, and it is wider and flatter in the front of the brim. Also, the center crease is creased lower toward the back than the front, if that makes any sense.
I thought maybe the bow was just on the wrong side but given the liner and the brim binding seam, it is correct.

Two hats arrived from Manfred today. The Danish postal service delayed their arrival, but they were definitely worth waiting for.

The first, a Stanton. Not a name you see or hear a lot, but a solid hat nevertheless. I have one like this in grey. Usually attributed to FWS but, according to Manfreds original posting, Steve thinks it may be Tonak made.

I like the midnight blue colour and the classic Fedora shape.

Sadly, it's lost its liner but still in good shape. A stingy brim Fedora with a wide ribbon and cool looking back bow.

It's a similar midnight blue colour to the Stanton.

(Part 2)

So I like hats that have a store or person's name stamped on them. I enjoy digging up the history associated it. Sort of gives the hat an extra dimension of character. It also serves as a reminder that the hat existed long before me, and with proper stewardship, it will have a life after me as well. I'm just the temporary owner at this moment in time.

Grady's in Jacksonville, TX was an independent shop that lasted roughly 30 years, from the late 40s until 1980. The only article I was able to find was actually written by a middle school student and archived by The Texas Historian, whose uncle happened to work there as a teen himself back in the 70s:

Grady Nutt was the owner. Maybe that name is familiar to some, but if you do a search you'll come up with hits for Grady Nutt, comedian, of "Hee Haw" fame. Well, he was actually Grady L. Nutt, son of Grady C. Nutt, hatter in Jacksonville, TX.

As a kid, I can remember lying on the floor under the table at my grandparents house while the adults played cards and watched "Hee Haw" and "The Lawrence Welk Show." I can't say I recollect any of Grady's bits from the show, but the connection struck me as interesting enough to go ahead and buy the hat. Tomorrow I head north for a small family reunion this weekend for all the grandkids. Not everyone will be able to make it, but there will be family coming from both coasts, and others I haven't seen in probably 20 years. Maybe I'll bring my new hat.

And that is that.

Hats with history: can't beat that. Brings them to life. Excellent post, Jonathan.

There's something about blue hats, Steve. Nice additions. I come across Wegener hats more often than Stanton, but they do show up on a regular basis. The later ones are not great quality though, so I tend to avoid them altogether (which is not right, but there you go).

VEB Vereinigte Hutwerke Guben Luxus in dark blue. No label inside the hat, but either a 56 or a 57 because it fits me very well. Brim at 6cm and crown 10cm at the center dent and it weighs 148 grams. These VEB hats aren't always of the best quality, but this one has an excellent hand to the felt. Did I mention it is blue?

I can understand that, Stefan. However, the grey Stanton I purchased from you and this one from Manfred have a solid quality about them. They have the look, the shape, the colour. Not top notch, but very respectable. Something you'd expect I guess from Tonak.

And ja, you can't beat blue.
