The wisdom of Pluto? :p

Time is indeed a human construct. It is a method for recording events that occurred prior or subsequent to this exact moment, events that can be used as a frame of reference for comparison in order to determine how, and/or if, humankind has progressed since those events occurred. We even count events that haven't occurred yet. "Boy, I'm sure looking forward to seeing that movie that opens next weekend." It hasn't even happened, yet we're counting the passage of time until it does. And once it does occur, we'll count the moments since it's passing; "Boy, that sure was a good movie we saw last week."

And if you think about it, time is mathematics. We're constantly adding moments that we ourselves have defined; seconds become minutes, minutes become hours, hours become days, and so on.

That's the thing--we each create our own reality. A simple example would be this: Three people witness an event, let's say a car accident. When recalling the event at a later point in time, each of them might relate different details specific to that event. One might say the driver of the first car was tall, another might say the driver was short. One might recall the second car was brown, while another might say it was red. And so on. So, right there, you have three different realities. And then you have the realities of the drivers of the cars involved, any passengers that might have been in those cars, other witnesses, and so on. A single event can have a multitude of realities. Which reality is the true reality?

Re - 'recording events' - not exactly. it is more for Observing what we label as events. we cannot record something just as surely as cannot ascertain it within a construct created for the purpose. in this way, it is a sort of 'constant' used in a framework for the observable. anything further is a stretch... :)

Re - 'mathematics' - math is not a construct. it is verifiable, so in this way it is a tool used to measure the dynamics of time.

Re - 'we each create our own reality' - what is "reality"? :p how do you define it and how can every person have their own? If we define the Reality in the sense of the Oxford Definition it is the world as it actually exists. This, cannot be part of a varying perception of infinite possibilities. Yet it seems to be, doesn't it? You should check out the documentary I pinned earlier on this post.. It addresses this very topic. ;)

Wowwwww....I always thought I was fairly intelligent having read Plato's Dialogs and several other pertinent Philosophers and thinking to myself that I was able to comprehend their written thoughts...and then Einstein's TOR and Hawkings Misc writings which have always left me confused...String Theorys ???
But these past 36 or so Posting's convince me that..."I know Nothing absolutely nothing at all"

I think I will stick to Hats and Retro...

Physics is variably complicated. Anyone who claims to understand anything of it easily is either lying or a bonafide genius on the Einstein level.... Philosophy, the true study, not the pseudo cult revival of it, is likewise in the same bag... A critical component to discussing any of this is to understand and in sincerity begin from the standpoint of Socrates 'know nothing' baseline as you have properly outlined. ;)

Where did you learn your Astrophysical Knowledge ?

Hah! knowledge is a stretch... My undergraduate degree is in Philosophy and Physics and my Graduate Studies have been in Anthropology and Religious Studies. I like diversity...

Where are you employed or are you employed as in working for pay ?

I would hope everyone gets paid for work! lmbo....I have worked in the Commercial Real Estate industry for 16 years now. I specialize in Valuation Services (Financial Analysis), Portfolio Management and most recently am now in Business Systems Development and Implementation. :p

Well, I know enough to know that what I know I don't know & as far as I know, that's all I know.

The "I" is always the first delusion.. There is a famous Mahayana fable that speaks of a tree with reference to knowledge, or the pursuit of such... It start with a full tree. And you begin by removing the leaves and branches and ask 'is it still a tree?'. You then remove the entire head of the tree so that a tall trunk stands and ask 'is it still a tree?'. You continue this until you are left with merely a short stump, (and as I am sure many know the age and attributes of a tree live in the root of its trunk) and you ask 'is it still a tree?'. When the attributes of a thing are all there are to ascertain its existence, you begin to perceive the concept of existence in a different light. Until you realize that the Only way to truly know a thing exists is by first understanding how it Does Not (or cannot). In this way, we begin to understand the concept of "No knowledge (as in a baby) vs Know knowledge (absence of such after experience)"

One of Socrates Quotes....

To know, is to know that you know nothing...
That is the meaning of true knowledge...
Socrates

Socrates studied Nagarjuna, the original paradoxical philosopher. There is an excellent book that really encompases the heart of the No knowledge philosophy called the Awakening of Faith (nothing to do with faith btw). Its only like 100 pages, It is a THICK read, but well worth it. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/p/awa...d=Google_&sourceId=PLGoP2988&k_clickid=3x2988

I have always been closer to Buddhism than any other, so called, Religion because of it origins and claims to Practice and Believe the following: "Do onto others as you would have them do onto you"
A Golden Rule Thing....

also.... I have lived my Philosophical life thru the meanings of a Socrates/Plato Idiom that says, Comprehension and Tolerance are the Keys to a Meaningful life....
and on into the Socratic Method...???...

Here I am Contemplating, in my 1941 Stratoliner, a little Socrates for the Morning...
The Strato helps me keep my thinking straight and meaningful...

re: buddhism - Most aren't aware that the "water into wine" method also stems from buddhist teachings, i.e. Jesus 'lost years'...

re: socratic method - there is a proponent in Six Sigma studies that adheres to 'aporia' to develop more efficient methods of productivity and evolutionary understanding of functions. This evolved from the Socratic Method... And is perhaps the most popular modern day practice of it. Skepticism also follows this somewhat.

And yes, that is a good foundation to base the practise of understanding (comprehension and tolerance) on.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

we may always be wrong, perhaps as having believed in contraction theories for so long; but I wouldn't throw shade up at the sun either... there may still be a purpose for our curiosity...
