Hi community -

Little background from me. My father who passed away last weekend always wore a fedora, and had a hat for every season. He had a great collection from felt to straw, wide to short brim, etc.. I don't think any of them were particularly expensive brands or top quality, but all were in great condition.

I took eight fedoras and left three to my brother.

Here is my question. My head shape and sizing differs from my dad. I think it fits a little high on my head and I see a gap from brim to my ears, which differ than the pics I see online. I would love to wear them to remember him, but don't know where to start.

Are Fedoras able to be altered? Where and who do I take it to? If I can at least get three good fedoras out of the bunch, It would be great. I'm located in Northern New Jersey, but would ship them if I had to.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all!

Sorry to hear about your Dad.

Fedora crown shapes can easily be changed to allow the hat to sit lower on your head. The oval shape of the hat opening can be changed as well. Any local hat shop with a steamer will be able to take care of this and the price is usually not excessive. It would be better to do this in person to get the crown heights perfect for you. Dramatically changing the hat size is much more involved, but if the fit is close, this probably won’t be needed.

There are tons of videos out there showing how to hand crease fedoras, if you’re feeling adventurous, all you need is steam.

Welcome!

Thank you HatsbySam.
Good to know they can be altered. I’ll look into a hat shop.

Can anyone recommend in the tri-state area?

If you are interested I can walk you through a way to determine the shape of your head. How much is the difference between your head size and the existing hats? Hats can be altered but only tweaked not dramatically changed without major overhaul. Inexpensive off the shelf hats are likely all regular oval. From your description you tend towards a long oval. Now it depends on how great the discrepancy to determine next steps. If the diff is major then you are looking at a major overhaul. Tear the hat components off and take it down to the bare felt and begin again. A little more info and we can determine next steps.

The hat owner has the info he needs and after the holidays settle down he will take next steps and from that decide where we go from here.
