What an exhausting day it was yesterday. I was asked if I could help out at work, just a few hours. Hah! A few hours, I worked from nine am until seven pm. Got home just in time for a quick turnaround, I managed to eat a meal, shave and shower, get dressed up and go to a fabulous 40th birthday party.
The birthday boy is a local DJ come singer, whose preferred choice is that of the crooners, and very good at it he is too. Whilst many dressed in suave sharp suits of the period, I knew it would be a hot night, both metaphorically and literally. I wore my deep blue floral shirt, topped with the hat that Esther made. That hat attracted a lot of complimentary remarks. The lady is such a talent.
Karl, the birthday boy, must have quite a cellar judging by the number of bottles of wine he received, but although it's a tad boastful to say so, the way his eyes lit up when he opened his gift from Tina, was a treat to behold. He has often commented on my Route 66 shirt, now he has one of his own, but he can get his own hat.



And this was my choice of shirt for the evening, I also wore the new blue trousers that Tina had altered, reshaped and restored.

GHT does have it going on, though he has a bit of an unfair advantage.

Dale, the weather was nicer here as well and the music was outdoors. Enjoyable evening. As to the beer, no head screaming. At $5 a pop, I kept my intake moderate and I sampled nothing that I'll be looking for in the beer aisle of the grocery store.

Thanks for the compliments fellas, all duly passed on to the lady. Although it might sound like I'm being a goody-two-shoes, I didn't have any alcohol because I was driving. My working life has been in logistics, that's distribution. Vans, trucks, forklifts and warehouses and all that. In my time I could be lenient with a miscreant, but on the subject of drink/drive, I was a stickler. So I set the example and demanded that others follow it. At a party such as the one last night, I can have a rocking good time sober. Being dance trained I have no need of dutch courage to get onto the dance floor.

Glad you like it, Dale. The material is one of Alexander Henry's collection. Click on the link and you will see two versions of Route 66. One like mine and the other with a black background, it's quite striking. It is relatively expensive as fabric goes, but extremely hard wearing and therefore good value. Two and three quarter yards would make you a shirt but you would need three yards if you wanted the panels and pocket to line up. (More waste.)
Do you know a seamstress, or relative who could help? For somebody skilled, it's not at all difficult. Lining & stiffening the collar and matching up the pattern is the hardest part, the rest is quite easy. It takes Tina ten hours from start to finish. She does use an original 1939 pattern, but again, the simplicity of the design means that you can buy a modern paper pattern and nobody would know. So Dale, now you know hows and wheres, stop dreaming and make it a reality.

The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu held a classic vintage event today, seriously damaging my wealth. Almost £50 for the two of us, entrance fee, I spent £20 on an original print of my MG, Tina spent, who knows how much, amongst the stalls, her arms laden with bags. I saw at least two hats protruding from one bag, dress patterns in another and fabric, or maybe garments, in a third.
It was overcast but the rain held off until about five pm, an hour before the event ended. We have not long eaten and now she's taken her spoils to her sewing cabin.

These sun glasses are actually a prescription lense, I must remember to stop balancing them on my nose, the way I do my reading glasses. And whilst I'm thinking about remembering, it's about time I called someone to give the garden shrubbery a haircut.

Not as colorful or original as some of the shirts seen here, but I kinda loved the pattern and the "subdued" colors.

That shirt is more subtle than subdued, yet it has vibrancy and class, a real beauty. Compliments to you.

Excellent choice, Cocker! I read (I think it was in the Wall St. J.) recently that the current trend of Alohas is leaning toward the less vibrant, more "contained" color schemes. So whether you knew it or not, you're right on the crumbling, err, CUTTING edge of fashion!! Well done!

Would a black satin shirt with lurex panels sewn on the front count as "contained?" This is one of many such shirts that I wore when competing in dance competitions. It's a real favourite because we had a local hotel, that got above itself in the snobbery stakes, by insisting that all guests dress as per the hotel's dress code. On one occasion the code was: 'Black Tie.' Tina made me a lurex covered neck tie which I wore with this shirt and added a white tux, black and white spectator shoes and I put the white, velcro fastened hatband around the fedora.
"That is not how one defines black tie, sir," the toffee-nose, uniform clad, doorman said, as I stepped out of the taxi, the door of which, he was holding open. "Am I barred?" I asked, delaying the cab from leaving. "No sir," He said, a tad haughtily, "thank you," I said, smiling and then slipped him a five pound note. That made him smile, and we got treated like royalty when we left, even to hailing us a cab, but I didn't give him anymore.

Thank you, guys! Well, to be honnest, I didn't aim for the most fashionable shirt, only for the one that looked good to me. I found it a bit more "original" than the traditional red/yellow Aloha shirts.

Now, I only have to wait for it to be home, and for the sun to start shining!

Have you ever been caught off guard? The tell tale sign of over indulgence of France's finest Merlot. Dear oh dear, what a state, I really should have left the straw Biltmore on, as well as the glasses.

We've just got in from an amazing wedding. Tina is running me a bath so that I can soak my hip, it does give me grief when I've been dancing on it. Esther could have sold her hat a dozen times over, it was complimented so much. So was the linen suit, talk about a match made in heaven. The reception had an Hawaiian theme, hence the garland. The tie is because of the formal wedding service, later I changed into my deep blue and white floral shirt. Tina made her dress and bolero.

What a mixed bag of weather, I was supposed to be at another classic car show today, but the weather has put me off, although the sun is trying to make an appearance this afternoon. The kind of shirt is de rigueur but not the hat, it's not wise to wear a straw hat when it's wet.
Tina thinks that this shirt fabric could have been inspired by: "Trains and Boats and Planes" a song written by composer Burt Bacharach and lyricist Hal David. But whenever I wear it I think of Walden Cassotto, whose fabulous hit: "Beyond the Sea," is priceless. You might know Cassotto better, as Bobby Darin.

That is a cool shirt and a real cool look. Is it wine in that glass, or a serious six fingers of whisky?

An early start this morning but an early finish, with the sun making a half hearted attempt at coming out, and with the occasional spot or two of rain, I left the straws in their boxes, but the shirt remains defiant.

A nice glass of wine oils the works perfectly. Being a tad short on time I am recycling an old photo. Look closely, the fabric depicts some of the most famous wine houses in the world. A wine drinkers uniform you might say.
