Steve, all these hat plates, tags, metal and velvet and whatever of nature are wonderful to behold. Wish I could see them in situ.

Their designs are so on the cusp of art nouveau / art deco that they are definitely somewhere between 1910s to 1930s, so 1920s is definitely a possibility.

Great finds and well deserved in your collection.

Steve, Yes they are really great. Stefan deserves the credit for this find. It just turned out to be more pieces than expected.

F.G.M. should be Franz Gober Munich - like Marks Bayerland

Here's my FGM - "Sport Velour" - late 50s/early 60s? - size 57 (unfortunately a bit too small)

Hut-Gundel in Bremerhaven - on the sweatband and the plastic stiffener

JHS Sigma - Seal Velour - grey with black ribbon - late 30s (?) - size 5 (57)
This is the best/finest velour I've ever held in my hands!

inside: unusual lining in purple and white (unfortunately a bit worn out)

grey sweatband with golden print

Hückel Logo on the lining

Logo of the seller: "Ortmann - Spandau" (since 1920 part of Berlin)
(at least until 1941 at the same address)

labels (unfortunately, a piece of foam sticks over it, which cannot be removed without damaging the rest)

Matt, Thank you for posting this fantastic JHS "Sigma" "Seal Velour"! I don't believe I have seen this type of liner design from JHS. The Velour finish does look great, same with the condition. I think you are correct on the dating maybe a bit earlier in the 1930s.

The velour felt of the F.G.M. is really beautiful,
but the velour of the Hückel is absolutely fantastic!

Unfortunately, both hats are about size 57 (7 1/8)
and too small for me... Very sad!
So maybe I will give them up with a heavy heart...

But what does that mean compared to your expertise?
And in your opinion it's maybe even mid-30s?

Matt, I have seen diagonal split liners like this before but not from JHS.

Here is a JHS "Standard" liner that has some similarities.

This Brüder Böhm "Bristol" is very similar.

This "Corona" Velour has a diagonal split liner.

Matt, I don't believe it's black. Unfortunately I am not sure where it is so I can't confirm. Also sadly the brim was shortened and the form changed sometime post 1960.

Unusual proportions for a trachten hat, Matt. They are almost always smaller brimmed and have more taper. Very nice.

I am looking for a pre 1918 Austrian hat. I would prefer a Homburg style but a fedora or bowler would work. This would not be for wearing, so size and condition does not matter. Maker does not matter either as long as it is Austrian (or Hungarian) pre 1918. I have found a couple top hats, but that won't work for what I need.

Can anyone point me in a good direction to search? Thanks in advance!!
