I gave up fixing elections, it was boring after a dozen countries. (Mwahahaha.)

But much more seriously:

Free elections are one part of democracy. However, a typical democratic system includes clauses to prevent the democratic abolishment of democracy. Human rights, protection of minorities etc are other points that are often regarded part of the definition of democracy.

So, in order not to be forced to "fix" it afterwards, one should make clear what is the framework in time before the elections.

Free elections are a means of democracy as a whole, rather than being a value in themselves, I think.

Most of these articles are written by extreme leftists because Reagan put an end to their parade.

Pinochet was no angel, but the venomous hatred the left has for him leads me to suspect that Sal Allende was not the meek reformer the Left portrays. Anyone (Pinochet) who the well known San Francisco Communist duo; Vincent and Vivian Hallinan :rage: hate must have been fighting some truly evil people.

This seems to me to be a strange logic (but who am I to judge as a sound leftist ;) ). According to this, Hitler wasn't such a bad fella, after all, he was criticised by lefties.

Please be sure I'm not accusing you of being pro-Hitler, I'm only showing a backside of your argument.

Concerning the comparison of Allende and Pinochet: Even as a right-winger, how can one equate "maybe not good for the economy" with "not really good for the economy either + torture + killing"? And na?Øvet?© with cynical, brutal unscrupulousness?

Pinochet was in no way any more brutal than other Latin American dictators; namely Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. Pinochet was fighting a brutal and dispicable force in Chile that wanted to enslave people. Fidel has never held a free and fair election. Pinochet held a plebiscite whether or not he should be allowed to stay in power. He lost and left office. He also left Chile better off economically than Allende ever would. Would Fidel ever do that? I'm tired of these leftists always equating Hitler with Right leaning governments. Hitler was a vegetarian, animal rights advocate, certifiable nutcase and socialist. Very far from a Reagan or Milton Friedman.

Fix an election?

How do you do that? Both sides, spending huge sums of money on the campaign...watching the opponent like a hawk, the media everywhere.... when is it done?

Yes, I agree there have been mistakes and people having their dog register to vote, etc. But in total, I believe the process is far, far more reliable than you think.

And Katt...if your Macavellian (sp) "end justifies the means"...is possible, then you must agree the political body as a whole is damaged as a result.

I still always wonder when people gripe about work, the union, the government, our schools....the word usually is "THEY" do this or that. Who is "THEY"? Some hidden, all powerful secret socitety? Where are THEY? What to THEY look like? Has anyone seen THEY?

I think WE are THEY.

Nope. It's not honest, and to do so would be going against what I stand for. If you can't reach your goal by honesty you're getting it by false means. And I don't believe in eye for an eye.

I know an election is coming up...but do we have to have all these political tabloid style threads?

With topics like "The Victory of Communisim!" and "Would You Fix an Election?"....I am sure the next titles will be:

Would You Assassinate a Head of State?

Is it Time for Violent Activism to Go Mainstream?

and

Saddam Hussein: The Misunderstood Humanitarian

I have always wanted the Fedora Lounge to be a place where the issues can be discussed in a mature and intellegent manner....but I really don't want to be in the catagory of communities that talk about big foot, UFOs and secret-societies-dominating-the-world conspiracy theories.

So very many heavy hitters arrayed vs. one elderly man.

I should be flattered. I must still have my stuff.

On a Thread Titled: Free, Fair and Open Elections.

I don't see what all the ruckus is about.

Don't forget to Vote on my poll. It closes on 9 Nov.

All I'll say, because I'm trying my hardest to stay out of this is: Very well said AndyKev... You summed up everything I've wanted to say, and so much better than I could have written it. Thanks...I've been asking that question of complainers for a long time. Also, the people who say that something (any given thing, just a generalization) is wrong, and they complain and complain about that something. They blame "they", however they never offer up ideas on how to fix said wrong thing, idea, war, whatever it is that is making them mad.
Yes, there is a problem in our voting system. But it is far better than one would think. I believe it has been slanted by a one sided media. Just my opinion, I enjoy hearing the views of everyone here.

The Peace and Freedom Party in California has called for the end of sanctions to Iraq (prior to the war), Syria, Cuba and Iran. So therefore those countries must not be all that bad? :eusa_doh: I don't see that logic at all. The Hallinans were evil people. So someone who is hated by evil makes me wonder why the evil hates him.
