Five Star Leather Jackets

The Five Star chart and instructions are confusing, however ignore the first jacket size column and look at the second ‘Suitable for Chest’ column, which is in red.
For example: If your chest measures 43-44 inches the chest size of the jacket is 48 ins and this will provide the 4-5 ins of space, which is also known as ‘ease’, to allow for a decent fit.

Of course, this all depends on how accurate Five Star actually are in making their jackets and whether they can work to all the exact measurements they state in their charts.

So if im looking in the red column, does that take into consideration my chest size when layered?

For example my chest size is 43 naked and 46 with a sweater. Should I order suitable for 46-47 which is a Large?

It’s unlikely any size chart would take into account layering because a manufacturer wouldn’t know what you intend to layer a jacket with or how thick it would be.
So, it would seem that all the red column figures are bare chest measurements and what size Cossack jacket you’re likely to be needing will all depend on what you intend to mainly wear underneath it.

If it’s t-shirts or shirts then based on the info and chart you’ve provided Five Star appear to be suggesting a size ‘S/40’ jacket. However, if it’ll be layered with sweaters then it looks you’d probably want an ‘L/44’

Of course, as said previously, all the above is only based on the info that Five Star supply and also that their jackets are accurately made, with the measurements of what you actually end up receiving being the same as in their size charts.

Yes. The best thing you can do, really, is figure out how much space you like to have in a jacket and how you want it to fit, therefore the size the jacket itself needs to be. I have jackets labelled from 42 up to 50, all of which fit me well, but with wildly varying size numbers depending upon manufacturer. When it comes to the jacket itself, I know I prefer a jacket with 26" p2p if I want to wear it with just a shirt or shirt and waistcoat underneath (*sometimes* I can get away with 25" if it's not much tapered otherwise), and 27" or 28" p2p if I want to be able to wear it more as an overcoat, with significant layering underneath. Concentrating on the size of the actual jacket itself is far more helpful than blindly trusting that the seller-s estimate of the size of person who best fits into it is the same as yours. This is something I have learned the hard way.

If a seller exclusively sells in letter- sizing (S /m/ l/ xl/ **l et cetera) without any kind of measurement guidelines, I won't buy from them without the opportunity to try on in person. Just not worth the hassle if it doesn't work out. Equally, if I am not sure I can trust the seller to be accurate with their measurements (or if stated measurements are too near the knuckle to risk them being off by an inch or two), I won't buy from them absent the opportunity to try on the exact jacket I'm looking at in person.

Avi jackets are made in Pakistan but I’ve heard some praises here on the forum..
AVI and 5Star are both made in Pakistan and both companies are fantastic at making specific A-2 contracts.......but their other designs are hilarious to look at (usually the cuff is silly narrow compared to the sleeve width and the shoulder width is like a 1980s Mall Jacket)
It's like they got a badly grainy photo of a 1980s Jacket and tried to size the chest sizing up and down without a tailor altering the overall proportions of the Jacket

Yep I prefer to stay away from them altogether.. I did buy a marine jacket from five star and it was horribly made and the fit was even worse. Smelled like a rubber tire too lol.. maybe for a starter jacket but I wouldn’t pay more than $150 for either of those jackets

Hi, Does anyone know what kind of suede they use? They charge an extra $50 for the suede option, but I can't find any specific details about it on their site.

Ive had 1 jacket from Fivestar. The construction and leather was good, but was too thick for my liking so I sold it.

I’m intrigued by their new more expensive horsehide. It looks good.

Anybody have a jacket in the newer horse?

I always get confused by the hate for leather jackets made in Pakistan. 40 years ago, at a fleamarket in Holland (I'm from the USA)--a vendor was selling very attractive big heavy coats. It was a style I had wanted since youth. I was 21 or 22 when I was wondering Holland.

I think at the time I spent maybe $50 USD on this coat. I still wear it today----stitching is solid, coat is rain , shine, snow, even quick hops on the motorcycle and the leather is thick.
If anyone is looking (coat in hand) at a coat made in Pakistan and has been too influenced by the hating--it's not USA, it's made poorly---examine that coat--especially if you're one to appreciate thick leather----

The issue with Five Star isn't that they're made in PK. Tons of great stuff is made there.

It's that they are a factory on which people project their fashion designs and concepts, which for obvious reasons are unlikely to bear fruit. They aren't pattern developers, which is its own trade (even in the Subcontinent).

I had 1 jacket from them which I sold because the leather was too thick (my fault) but the construction was good.

Nothing wrong with their sewing, they do a very good job at that.
Problem is most of their A2 patterns are off in a number of ways and the leather is lackluster. Heavily pigmented leather.
For its price point it’s a good enough jacket for someone who can’t afford an Eastman, Goodwear, Aero or BK.
But a five star A2 will never be confused for one of those jackets. They are not comparable.

Anyone have experience or review on this? Any fit pics, is it a bit cropped?

I've always thought at least some 5* jackets were comparable to Top Tier jackets, but some aspects of the 5* jackets may not be equivalent in materials/quality of workmanship/faithfulness to original design(s) in same aspects compared to most Top-Tier jackets. IOW, the much less expensive 5* jackets may compare adversely in some respects compared to top-tier jackets. Given the significant difference in price, this is expected.

OTOH, at least some 5* jackets are decent enough and affordable, as are some other carefully selected low/mid-tier jackets. Much of this depends on one's budget and the use(s) to which the jacket will be put.

I certainly appreciate the attention to materials/design/workmanship exhibited by Top Tier jackets. This high level of quality serves to push standards upwards for all makers.

At any rate, I just ordered a 5* "G-8" goatskin (G-1 style) jacket with some size and feature tweaks. https://www.fivestarleather.us/prod...g-aviation-jacket?_pos=1&_sid=4e02b8077&_ss=r Yes, I understand that there is no such thing as a US MIL "G-8" jacket--at least as presently known. I just like the overall design, especially if they will tweak it as I have asked, and which tweaks/adjustments Shawn, their Representative, has said are perfectly feasible. We'll see how it works out. It'll be a stablemate for my similar US Wings Indy jacket.

I'm trying to imagine where I would ever wear my 5* experience in goatskin....feels so plastic compared to so many other goatskin jackets I have. Maybe for Halloween?

I understand; looks like something that the late Michael Jackson would have worn as a "Stage" item. Obviously not all 5* items are similar, so unfair to compare apples with oranges.

If I may ask, why did you buy it?

Great great question. Many of us here wanted to go through a custom jacket process from A-to-Z and you don’t know, as Forrest Gump said “what you’re gonna get.” if I knew it would look or feel like this at the end obviously I would’ve had no part in it so as I said, your question is quite a good one and quite relevant.
