Fashion brand my ass, I was out for an hour and a half walking in the snow at 24 degrees and no problem whatsoever.
It may be lighter but it damn sure works great! I got back to the condo and was completely dry.

How recent is this piece ?

I don't mean to say that you aren't getting any kind of substance with a modern Filson cruiser, just that they're gradually giving the customer less and less while charging more because they're targeting a market segment which largely doesn't know the difference.

They can't get away with eliminating all of the substance and function, but have absolutely become more about their name and aesthetic than they have about offering that substance and function to the people who really need it.

Jac shirts are awesome too, don't over look those, they're lighter weight wool but much nicer grade, wool fabric may still be from Pendleton, you've gotta ask their customer service. Alaska fit size 40 is 24" P2P, edit size 40 is 22.5” P2P, but the sleeves are short, 24" length. So you will need long sizes.

My 40L Jac-shirt (from about 2014) in 40L is a bit too long in the sleeves at 6'1" if that helps (which it might not because they've simplified their sizing in recent years) but just in case that is useful to anyone.

I can’t argue with the sentiment here because I feel the same way. I can say that I have been buying Filson gear for 32 years now and I still feel that they offer a good product that stands up to real outdoor use.
I only buy the woolens that they still make in Seattle, a very small percentage of their catalog anymore, and only when they are on sale.
Sometimes I too wish that they were still that small brand that you only found in stores that outfitted real outdoorsman and women. Those days are gone, but at least Filson is still here.

I can’t argue with the sentiment here because I feel the same way. I can say that I have been buying Filson gear for 32 years now and I still feel that they offer a good product that stands up to real outdoor use.

Honestly I don't mind about companies having extra stuff (that to me is basically merchandise) like that if it subsidizes the stuff we want to buy.

Like if Ralph Lauren was only selling RRL raw denim and cowboy/work boots made from the cattle on Ralph's own ranch, they'd be out of business. The pony tees keep our stuff going lol.

I bought this hooded cruiser on sale about 3 weeks ago and it works very well for me in my early morning walks. I get what y'all are saying about Filson and their growth and merchandising however I doubt that they would exist had they not expanded and with that moved their production overseas. While we would all love to have American made quality like using the Pendleton wool etc this wool jacket is pretty well made. Arguably not Lost Worlds quality but pretty decent. The buttons are sewn on well and the lining is good quality flannel. Now uderstand I am not planning on chopping down redwoods or whatever they have out in Eugene with this jacket. I plan on doing some decent long walks everyday and using it that way when I don't want to wear one of my LW's. It doesn't feel that light and certainly better than your average Mall Jacket.

Cutting back and simplifying the lineup to some core products can be a good solution to try before branching out to subsidize, but it all depends what the goal of the company is.
Are they still family owned, or did they get bought out by a conglomerate that really just wants the brand recognition.

I believe that if they had the right goals, they could have cut their line way back to just some core flagship products that were selling the most and been able to stay on the right track without the need to move a ton of production overseas.
It seems that the internet brought some major attention and popularity to their brand causing them to get off track.

I mean I think in the case of RL the mass market products are extremely well patterned, fabrics are almost always exclusively milled for them, etc. Despite my joking about them they are actually high quality products.

In the case of Filson, my understanding is that their regular clothing items and things are still subject to their lifetime warranty so I expect quality can't be all that poor.

My Filson Jac shirt in size 40R has


22.5" P2P and 24" sleeve. The wool feels more premium than the cruisers but a bit thinner and drapes better. My go to Filson pieces are the vest, jac shirt and sometimes the cruiser, in that order.

I also got the made in Nicaragua Mackinaw Jac Shirt, in size Medium, it is cut different than the made in USA Jac shirt in size 40R, I think this is their "fashion fit", it's narrower and longer.

Filson has been bought and sold at least twice that I know of. But I still like what they have. I also enjoy going to their store, it's always a treat.

I cancelled all my orders lol. I found an old Pendleton Mackinaw Cruiser that my grandpa had. This is amazing, saves me money.
