Summer in New Zealand appears gorgeous in your pics. The Pohutukawa, New Zealand Christmas Tree, is fantastic. This early morning here in Minnesota I am quite taken by the vistas and long horizons. Spectacular scenery in New Zealand today.

Cheers, Eric -

Day…I don’t know what day of my trip it is.
We traveled from Ahipara through Kerikeri to Paihia in the Bay of Islands.

A random stop at a random beach.

Etsuko had a beer. Coffee for the driver.

A Turkish kebab lunch. We ordered the small size. I told the owner that his small size would be an extra large in Japan. He told me that it was “Kiwi sizes” and that in Turkey, it would also be a large size. Either way, it was great.

The old stone store in Kerikeri is New Zealand’s oldest building.

So many of the streets up north are lined by these purple flowers (and white ones of the same kind, making for pleasant driving.

Might not count because I didn't wear a fedora, but it was 70 (21c) and sunny so I took the kids to the Cahaba River. Not a bad way to spend New Years Day. Hope everybody has a happy and healthy 2023.

Happy New Year to you and your family Dale. Great way to celebrate the occasion!

Yesterday was such a beautiful day for January it felt good to take a drive. A one-hundred sixty+ yr old Civil War home on the banks of Bee Creek & the edge of the 10-12 mi long Bee Creek Civil War Battlefield. The home was captured & commandeered by both the Union & Confederate armies during the wks long skirmish to be used as a field hospital & command center.

One-hundred+ yr old tobacco barn that was reskinned & reroofed just a few yrs ago. Cash crops of the day were tobacco, hemp to be spun into rope, & cotton. Most other crops were bartered. Shown with an Optimo Original West Series.

Hickory & willow cane grew voluntarily along the banks & swamps of Bee Creek. It was harvested & made into furniture to be bartered for other goods & services necessary in life. The practice of hickory furniture making would come about again during the Great Depression. That furniture is highly collectible & sought after today.

RBH; Thanks for taking us along on your adventure. Good opportunity to visit with friends. Rubbing elbows with the famous/infamous hat folks at WESA I imagine is intriguing.

Cheers, Eric -

The hat was the same Akubra Stylemaster. The beer was...good.

It kept Etsuko happy in her Akubra Leisure Time.

The view from our lunch restaurant.

Bailey Toyo for a picture in front of the Tesla we rented.

I'll try to get more photos up in good time. Same old same old as far as the hats go, but I hope people enjoy seeing a bit of Aotearoa.

Looks very nice. New Zealand is one of those places I'd love to go someday.

Where was I?
Not much to show from December 21 in the way in terms of photos, except for Etsuko looking a bit shady in her Akubra Leisuretime in front of the new Hundertwasser museum in Whangārei.

We had planned to spend a couple of nights at a friend's farm, but his son came down with Covid-like symptoms that morning. We still called in for a socially distanced, outdoor "hello", but it was pretty disappointing.
Still, we came across another beach on the way back to my brother's place in Auckland.
