We took a vacation to Italy. We basically did two legs, The first was the central Italy countryside, The second leg was Rome.

Traveled to Lauderdale Co. in NW AL yesterday. We have about 20 acres of an old homestead there we haven’t checked on in awhile. It sits on a steep hill for the most part and after being logged about 20 years ago, it’s thick with undergrowth and made for an interesting hike to the pond at the bottom. Ran across what looked like a fox den. Charcoal Gannon made the trip.

That's a mighty fine Gannon there! I've spent a lot of time in Lauderdale County, Florence, to be exact, but none in the back country, except around the campgrounds on the river and such. I still go to Florence quite a bit when the lady wants to shop or go out and eat somewhere nicer than McDonald's.

I've been mostly off this site for a week but I have a good excuse. My wife and I just finished a week in Barcelona. We had a great time and saw some amazing sites.

Even got to go to a Barcelona match.

And see the Castellers in one of the squares.

We also took a day trip to Girona as well, what a beautiful city.

It’s been at the top of my list for some time. Very envious.
But I think your wife deserves a fedora!

It was a real buzz to get a visit from our Canadian niece. After a night at our house, we took her, and her friend to Mt Koya, the home of one of the main branches of Buddhism in Japan.
The white wisterias at one of the temples were in full bloom. Both the buzzing of the bees and the aroma of the flowers were amazing. So peaceful.

One of the main buildings in Mt. Koya.
IMG_2045.jpeg

pushing this temple building a full circle is equivalent to chanting a number (10?) o Buddhist sutras.
IMG_2046.jpeg

In front of the rhododendrons at another temple. Both of us wearing Borsalinos.
IMG_2049.jpeg
IMG_2050.jpeg

A couple more shots from the same temple.

Then on to our hotel in the south of Wakayama Prefecture.
A nice sunrise from our room.

The next day we went to a soy sauce brewery which has been in operation for over 300 years and is one of, if not the oldest in Japan (and therefore most likely, the world). I know the owner/brewer through school contacts.

I didn’t get pictures inside this time. It’s the second time I’ve taken family here, and it’s always a highlight of their trip. We’re so grateful to master brewer Keisuke and his wonderful family (his daughters are my students).
IMG_2060.jpeg

For those of you who are interested, here is a video about Keisuke and the brewery.

Then it was back home for grilling meat, fish and veggies on a Japanese shichirin grill.
We said goodbye this morning.

Was in Lisbon last week. Highly recommended, especially for (sea)foodlovers. The trusty Dunlap panama was with me.

Pastéis de Belém, which is the name only one bakery is still allowed to use. Every one else calls them pastéis de nata. Puff pastry with a cream filling. More than lovely.

Found a hat shop too. Nothing to take my fancy, but glad to see one hanging in there.

Only decent hat seen in the whole of Lisbon. The wearer paints with coffee. Sepia scenes obviously.

Some more food pics; two courses of a nine course meal (with wines to match). I could get used to that.

And some more seafood: an octopus carpaccio with peppers.
