I think one of the stacks of the leather portion could be ground down to be more “parallel”, now they are a trapeziums shaped resulting in the rear height to be more prominent. Will ask cobbler

It always sucks when a pair of boots just don’t fit right. It’s not always a width or length thing. I’ve got a few pairs in the back of the closet waiting to go to a cobbler to try to get the fit right. Others I just give up on.

Recently saw some Wescos at around the four hundred dollar mark, selling through a US stockist. Are these a cheaper line, or...? I'm also tempted by the Whites Nomads increasingly, but the lack of opportunity to try before I buy (no UK stockists) is off-putting, especially as I read all sorts of advice online about sizing which conflicts.

As far as I'm aware, Wesco doesn't have a cheaper line. Their engineer boots as standard boots run around $400 USD in price. That being said for the quality they're worth every penny. I personally ordered my Boss engineer boots and paid the $99 USD fee to have them made to my foot measurements. They'll send you a form and you have someone trace and measure your feet. It takes a few minutes and is absolutely worth it.
No worries about fitment then. My Wesco boots are more comfortable than my normal running sneakers are.

If you're going to spend $400 USD, I'd say spend $99 more and remove all questions of proper fit and comfort. I've got size 10.5 EEE Width feet with high arches. I also have 17" calves from years or boxing training and genetics A nightmare in general for fitting. In pull on boots doubly so. Best money I ever spent was the up charge on my boots. My mindset is why spend $400 on a maybe when I can spend $500 on a definitely. I hope this helps you.

A single midsole in a Wesco is pretty stiff so double would be one hell of a break in period.

I just bought some Wesco Jobmaster and dropped a 1/2 size down from my usual sneaker size.

I found they fit a bit wide for a D width and the toe box area is quite wide also but mine were lace to toe so I am unsure if that had an affect on fit. The welt was also quite wide especially on the inner arch area and the welt was around 3/4" wide so the boots looked like canoe paddles while on. I tried a stock pair with the thicker Vibram 100 sole.

I need to email Baker shoe and see if a different sole would have a thinner welted area as the ones with the 100 sole looked so big.

I have a double sole Wesco boot (not engineer- Jobmaster). I don't know that it took twice as long to break in (it's also Domain Black Tie, if that matters), but it is forever a massive platform of a sole. In a good way. It'll never flex like my other Wescos, but it sure is stable and indestructible. I wouldn't want all my boots to have that, but I genuinely enjoy wearing these.

That is indeed a good idea; would be well worth it in my case, as typically I need an insole to take a little of the space up in most engineer boots ('wide' seems to be the standard fit for an engineer, I'm definitely a medium - D, in US terms). Once that sort of money is on the table, it makes sense to pay a little more. It's on my list, certainly, if the blessed pound sterling would just recover a little!

Sounds like pair of William LEnnon B5s I have. There's certainly something reassuring about a good, solid sole.

I think reassuring is a good word for it. Also nothing like it for supporting a wide foot.

That is good to know. I was wanting to do a double mid on the Job Masters and Baker Shoe talked me out of it and said it would be like walking in ski boots.

For me they're the most comfortable boots I own, this new pair is a little tighter to get on than the first, not sure if that's one of the differences between the two lasts.
As long as you get your measurements right I think you'll find them very comfortable.

Here's another quick snap of the 1940 last, I’ve found the right polish now, that other was too ox blood.
As you can see the toe box has molded to my foot rather quickly, wet grass will do that, making them just so comfortable.
Sorry for hogging the thread of late, but I've just been enjoying my boots recently

They are clearly great boots Dav. The only thing that would bug me a little is the big toe peeping out but I guess with an unstructured toe is unavoidable and maybe desirable?

Yes, Rios of Mercedes.
They were on sale at Rockmount Ranchwear in Denver. They have 2 pair (10 and 11). They told me that these were the only ones they’ve seen like this.
