I'm curious what was the idea behind the D shape of the pocket instead of more normal rectangular shape? is it meant for riding gloves, I can't imagine any other objects benefit from the shape more than gloves.

Despite some overly romantic sources that claim they were designed for holding pistols (this is false) they were originally designed as map pockets on flight suits. This pre-dated the common usage of zippers for closing the opening, and the D shape, sloping down from the opening kept the contents relatively secure and accessible, similar to the way the rounded cut of most pocketbags for handwarmer pockets keep anything you put in there from falling out. There was quite a bit of variation from maker to maker, especially in the late 1930s-early 1940s Aviator Jacket style, in the shape, placement and dimensions of the D-Pocket.

and they really work well as map pockets! I just returned from a solo trip out west through the Colorado Rockies and wore my LW J-23 the whole way (actually took 2 one in denim and one in goat) using the "D" for carrying pages from my HOG Atlas each day!

Just what I was thinking (well, that, and that I need to ride over to Colorado). We need more pics of the denim!

I will put some up later tonight. Right now getting ready for the up coming funeral procession for Sgt. Wyatt one of the Marines killed here in Chattanooga by the terrorist. Our plant is planning on being outside for the procession down Amnicola Highway today. Very Somber occasion.
