Despite some overly romantic sources that claim they were designed for holding pistols (this is false) they were originally designed as map pockets on flight suits. This pre-dated the common usage of zippers for closing the opening, and the D shape, sloping down from the opening kept the contents relatively secure and accessible, similar to the way the rounded cut of most pocketbags for handwarmer pockets keep anything you put in there from falling out. There was quite a bit of variation from maker to maker, especially in the late 1930s-early 1940s Aviator Jacket style, in the shape, placement and dimensions of the D-Pocket.
