Canadian Stetsons

My bid wasn't high enough for this to travel to the States and I'm not sure if a Lounger bought it, but I'm putting it in here for posterity.

Hot damn. 5/8 ended up 7 5/8 instead of 6 5/8. Lucky! Looks like a great hat. Shame you didn’t win it.

This Canadian Open Road was on a slow schooner that got caught in weather going abound the horn…well over a month to be delivered.

5 1/2(+)” open crown and 2 3/4” wide brim. It’s in such great condition that I decided not to crease it. Some foxing on the liner, but the leather sweatband is soft and supple.

The Buckaroo Enigma

I have 2 hats called The Buckaroo, neither of them having the name Stetson anywhere on them, but I'm convinced they were both made by Stetson in Canada for someone or other. They both have the same liner design, although in different colors. They seem to be separated in age by 15 to 20 years or so. The 1st and older hat I've posted on the Pre 1940 Stetson Western thread. I found an apparent brother to this hat, owned by TheGuitarFairy, who posted his hat on the New Hat thread. My 1st hat, which I think dates late 1930's, 3 inch brim, 5 1/2 inch open crown. The sweatband on this hat was replaced in a store that didn't open until 1982.

The brother to this 1st hat, from TheGuitarFairy. Note that his hat does have a Stetson reorder tag from Philadelphia, but his hat and mine have the same type mfg tag and same Block Number. I'm not claiming that this hat was a Buckaroo, but trying to show a Stetson link between his hat and mine.

My 2nd Buckaroo. Dates to 1950's. Has 3 1/4 inch brim and 6 inch open crown. The reorder tag exactly matches the tag on Brent's Canadian Open Road on this page. I found this hat up in Canada.

I like that you’re making the distinction that Stetson is not actually anywhere on the hats. I’m curious why you’re convinced they’re Stetsons then?
I'm not trying to be rude, but if you still have to ask that question after everything I've said in these posts, then I simply don't know what else to tell you, for the most part. Look at the keyhole size tags. Look at the numbers on the mfg and reorder tags. They are all of a Stetson nature, besides all I've already said.

1950's Canadian Imperial Stetson Homburg. I've posted this hat also on the Imperial Stetson thread. I found this hat online in the Montreal area.

No worries Mike, I’m not getting rude vibes at all. There’s a lot of us on here that are overly passionate about hats, and in particular, the Stetson brand.

Along with that passion, I’d say we also like to see certain proof or backing for certain claims. There’s been other threads where you’ve been challenged in a similar way, and I honestly say it’s all in hammering down accuracies. I personally don’t agree with the assumption in this thread, but there’s always room for opinions until definitive info comes along. Thanks for sharing your hats! Cheers

I understand, Ross. I'll just say a last thing. The only reason I bought that 2nd Buckaroo was to try to confirm what I believed about the 1st one. So finding a tag in the 2nd one that matches what's in another Stetson is corroborating evidence to me. Similarly, my 1st hat has a tag that matches the tag in another known Stetson hat. These things are what I call evidence.

Mike, I’m reluctant to say anything, but as these hats were not made by Stetson but another hat maker in Canada and there isn’t any Stetson branding…? I guess I’m saying if it’s not branded a Stetson and we know it wasn’t made by Stetson than it’s hard to call it a Stetson. I wonder if they used old stock of Stetson tags on hats made for someone other than Stetson? I guess it all comes down to what makes a Stetson a Stetson.

Great hats in any case.

I'm not actually calling these hats "Stetson brand" since they're not marked as such. But I've convinced myself that Stetson did indeed make them. That's just my verdict, not made from any emotional attachment. The details, as I see them, don't allow me to draw any other conclusion. But I won't pretend to be surprised that others disagree. By the way, they are both nice hats.
