Here's an ad for an Akubra "Sundowner" in Popular Science, March, 1970

I just found that. It was an Akubra name. It looks like a current Boss of the Plains in the Popular Science ad.

My sympathies, except it is a nice looking lid. :)

Thanks. I'm actually not that bummed. I do like the hat and it is different for sure. I do feel bad if I have inadvertently "supported" counterfeit products if that is the case.

Do pennance by e-mailing Stephen Keir at Akubra. I watched the vid on the other thread and it sounds like he might like to hear how it came to you and perhaps to get some pics, too.

I'll do that. I just looked at the liner itself and it actually says "pure fur felt" - only the sweat band has the "pur" - and whomever had this hat before me put a bunch of mileage on it. It's been worn quite often.

So it's seen some mileage? How long have the Chinese fakes been around? Maybe it's legit, just a mistake in the lettering on the sweatband that got through quality control. The liner looks kind of like the one in my Squatter, now that I think of it, and I'm reasonably certain it's a genuine Akubra.

It's definitely seen a good amount of use. I'm interested to hear from Akubra on this...

I won't rule that out. If the design of the liner and the block lettering on the sweat band squares with the records at Akubra, it's possibly vintage. Of course, criminal enterprises have been undone by small errors before.

If you were selling bogus hats, wouldn't you prefer to sell bogus vintage hats ?

Getting Better

A few minutes ago, while listening to some Beatles, I decided to work on some of my hats. When I got my latest Fed, I put a temporary center dent into the crown figuring to do something better later. Well, I finally decided what I wanted, a somewhat sloppy look. Here are the results

I'm fairly pleased with what I've done, though I wish I were better at shaping beyond center dents. [huh]

Hi Methuselah,

I'm originally from the People's Republic of Merseyside, I fear I find myself in Manchester because of something bad I did in a past life :eusa_doh:

I won't take umbrage at that as I'm not originally from Manc either!

I've got an acorn Stylemaster winging it's way to me as I type. I hope it gets past the Post Office's beady eyes without attracting any extra duty payment too...

Hey everybody, here's a bit of news!

If you haven't checked DavidMorgan's site recently, it looks like they now sell Akubra Stylemasters. However, the only color they have right now is carbon grey...

I just received their latest catalog but haven't really given it a good look-through.

It may or may not be in their physical catalog. They've got really nice hats, though, and it may be time for me to order a hat from them.

Looking good! I might have to get me a Fed so I can play with bashes like that. The teardrop on the Stylemaster looks great and I have no plans to change it, but it is a fairly low crown so doesn't seem to allow a lot of scope for experimentation anyway.

Just need to build up some nerve for the higher crown of a Fed now. Not sure if I have the audacity... ;)

Thank you!

A taller crown is a step that initially takes courage, when I first started wearing them, it felt as if I were wearing a ten gallon hat, but just kept on until I became comfortable in them.
