The reason distilled water is used in steaming is not for the hat, but to reduce mineral build up in the device, depending on the quality of water in your area. If you're on a well, I recommend it. If you're on "city water," it's likely not necessary.

If you're on Flint, MI, water, run like hell.

That wouldn't matter in a kettle

I am on a well and do use distilled in my steamer

I'm on excellent city water, but use it because I'm OCD. Or CDO (the letters are in the right order that way).

Or COD if you like to ship that way...or are possibly at a seafood restaurant

I also very literally battle OCD and have my entire life... it can be absolutely exhausting ... not sure if that is why I use distilled though... could very well be

I'd say mine's a mild case, but still present. I'm sure I irritate others, but it can often be tapped to our advantage.

COD? Now I want fish.

As your last comment implies, it depends on the city. They put so many chemicals in our water that it sometimes smells and tastes like they're drawing it from the local public swimming pool.

For anyone that hasn't looked , www.hatsdirect.com , AKA The Hattery , has a New Color In-Stock for the Heritage Deluxe Campdraft ... Cedar Brown , but I didn't see an example of the color . I didn't search the other Hats to see if it showed there .
You might also want to take a look at the RM Williams "RM" Hat

http://www.rmwilliams.com.au/akubra--rm--hat/HA179.html

In my opinion it's a nicer brown than the Cedar Brown CD and slightly taller crown. Not open crown but very easy to reshape into a fedora with a little bit of steam.

Here are some pics of a Cedar Brown Campdraft Deluxe that a fellow lounger was selling a little while ago.

Thanks Andrew _Australia , I saw that Campdraft Rick was selling , but I thought it was the RM Williams Campdraft by Akubra . Both colors look good to me , I know several that have the RM Williams , but yeah , the Crown is already pressed , so it needs to be Blown Out and Re-Creased . Seems the Brim maybe flanged , but shown down all around , as I recall . I need to take another look . Seems Rick ended up keeping that one .

Michael, yes the brim is down all the way around but it was easy enough to get an upward curve on the back of the brim.

I rolled up a tea towel, put an elastic band at each end of the 'roll' to keep the roll tight, steamed the back of the brim and curved it around the rolled up tea towel. It took a couple of goes but I was pretty happy with the result.

I will try to find some photos of my RM hat

Check the Hampton to see a photo of the Cedar Brown. Might possibly just a bit lighter than the "mid brown" of the RM Williams version, but that could just be my monitor settings or the lighting from when the photo was taken. Not a lot of difference to my eye.

Also, the brim of the RM Williams is only slightly flanged - not nearly as much as most CampDrafts. It will turn up enough for the fedora look, but looks better when turned down in the Aussie slouch manner. This is my favorite method because I want the neck protection from sun, it sheds water better and I prefer the look.
