For comparison, here's an Akubra "Fedora" in Burnt Oak. The colors are very close.

I'd never seen a noggin shot of an Akubra Fedora before. Doesn't seem to have much taper at all -- or did you reblock it?

Nope. This was my first open crown new hat. It does have a bit of taper, but not much. This center dent and pinches are what I put in it when I took it out of the box and I haven't futzed with it since.

Smaller dimensions than a CD (5.5" x 2.5") and it didn't do the shrinking routine, either. A nice snug 58 cm when I first put it on and still is to this day.

I do really like the Moonstone. I love the color & I love the way my diamond crease came out. I love CD's & it doesn't bother me if they're not soft as "buttah". The comfort comes from the overall fit & the quality of the sweat. The Heritage Moonstone has the better grade of leather & it is also wider. I haven't measured it but it is definitely wider than the sweat in the older Mid Brown.

The Mid Brown was an early attempt with an open crown for me, & it got a teardrop. At some point I will probably redo the crease but haven't yet.

The Bluegrass Green got a C-crown. It's among my favorites because of the versatility of the color. I'm real happy with it as well.

I wish they offered a CD in Navy blue.
your Moonstone CD is my absolute favorite CD on the forum... just so wonderfully shaped

Thanks Bob!

I was going to post this earlier but I was afraid of making anyone mad, so everyone should take this in jest as it was meant to be; but I worry more about my beard being "soft as buttah" than I do my hats.
God forbid if you should tease someone...
That's what this place so desperately needs. A little clever, lighthearted repartee and some good old fashioned ball bustin.

Hi guys,

Just a quick question to re-open this thread again. It's something which I know has already been covered numerous times and I've done a bit of research but thought I would ask you guys straight off for an expert opinion...!

I'm considering a Campdraft at the mo and I'm normally a size 59 (my head measures 58.5-59, depending on how long my hair is at the time). An true 59 usually fits me just fine. I'm wondering what size to get and I'm thinking about shrinkage. I've got a Fed IV in 60 (i was advised about shrinking when I bought it) which I padded out so it fits ok, but tbh I don't wear it all that much so it has never noticeably shrunk.

If I get a camp draft I intend to wear it more often. So I presume it will shrink. Or will it?

I mean how much do they shrink and how much/often should you wear it? I can't honestly say that I would wear it every single day, but hey, it's a cool looking hat so I want to get some use out of it.

I guess I'm thinking well 59's are usually fine, so why not stick with that as opposed to having an oversized hat with padding which may not even shrink at all!

But I guess I can always put a 60 in the shower etc, to speed up the shrinking process. I'm happy to work the hat a bit and I do that with others, and tbh I'm not fussed about it looking perfect at all either - I like a rougher, more beat up style.

I'm thinking a 60 for a safe bet. Better too large to begin with than too small in the long run. And just in case you wondering, I've tried all the local hat shops to try out a CD, but they're not stocked around here unfortunately (Stockholm. Sweden).

Anyway, apologies the the lengthy post but any advice would be great!

Thanks

The 60 should work out just fine.

If you are ordering from hatsdirect or everythingaustralian you can just tell them your head measurnents and they will hook you up appropriately.
I am a 59 LO and I always buy a 60. Takes a few months of daily wear to get it into a proper LO. Shrinking down a size usually takes two years of daily wear and removing the foam as it shrinks.
Hope that helps
Johnny

Hey,

Thanks for the speedy replies chaps. I realise I'm probably overthinking stuff, but it doesn't hurt to ask a few questions, right?

Plus it's tough when you don't have a hat shop nearby to ask Q's, etc.

I think the 60 and stick with the advice to size up is a safe bet.

Also, while I'm here, one other thing - the reservations that I have about the campdraft is the square-ness of the crown. Like I said I've got a Fed IV which I've read has a v similar shape crown, but I've also got a pretty slim face (and I reckon these full bodied crowns can look a bit funny on me). The reason I'm after a CD is to primarily make it into an OR style hat with a cattleman crease. Does anyone have any recommendations as to similar style hats with more tapered crowns that I can bash into an OR style?

Again, any tips would be great.

Cheers guys ;)

My head measures so close to a size 60 (regular oval) that the difference isn't worth mentioning. I have three Fed IVs and three Campdrafts, all size 60. After the expected "shrink to fit" period the Feds all fit the same and the Campdrafts all fit the same, but the Campdrafts were a little more snug, maybe 1/4 to 1/2 a size smaller. I used a Hat Jack to stretch them out a little, and that solved the problem. So in my experience, if you're a 58.5-59 a size 60 might work for you if you like padding under the sweatband or if you like your hats to fit loose, but if you like a snug fit I'd go with a 59 and get/use a Hat Jack to stretch it out if it gets a little too snug.

Just in case you don't already know, the reason they shrink is because the leather Akubra uses for it's sweatbands gets dehydrated as you wear, and more specifically sweat in, their hats. In my experience it usually takes a few days to a week of wearing the hat for most of this dehydration/shrinkage to occur. Akubra knows this, and they size their hats accordingly to account for this dehydration/shrinkage. That being said, I've read posts by members here who have received Akubra hats in the same size and style that varied as much as a full size, so getting a good fit literally seems to be "the luck of the draw" if you're ordering online. Also, the leather they use for their regular/Imperial Quality hats is different from the leather they use for their deluxe/Heritage Quality hats, so the deluxe hats will shrink less, but either way should conform to your head nicely if you get the right size; admittedly, I may simply have been lucky.

...Also, while I'm here, one other thing - the reservations that I have about the campdraft is the square-ness of the crown. Years ago Akubra made the Open Road for Stetson to be sold to the Australian market. When that association ended, Akubra kept making their version of the Open Road and renamed it the Campdraft. So Stetson's Open Road and Akubra's Campdraft are essentially the same hat. As such, if you want a Cattleman's crease the Campdraft would be a good choice in my opinion.
