I also got mine off the rack two years ago, a battered steer one. Luckily the fit was spot on.

If I remember correctly a member, here, has a Shackleton with a leather back made of HH Battered or Vicenza. But I can’t remember who...

Ken made the prototype with a leather back, then decided it was too stiff for what he had envisioned. They've done a few to special order, though.

Early versions were made with leather backs, but I don't think it really *worked*. It's that difference between a leather jerkin and a jacket without sleeves, I suspect...

It would certainly need the right hide so as not to be odd. I think too part of the mix might be whether it's sized to wear like a jerkin or a waistcoat. (The latter, I think, would be more forgiving with leather). Mind you, it could also be a break-in timed thing too: my FQHH Bootlegger is as soft as you can imagine after seven odd years' wear.

Scooters have certainly changed in the last forty odd years; a lot of them can rival motorcycles for performance now. (And truth be told, I'm not sure I want to go much faster than 55 sitting on or over an engine in the open!)

I hear ya on the hair thing: I've been shaving what little I've had left since 2006. Time required for a full head shave is definitely diminishing, and not only because I've gotten skilled at it....

Could Aero's vegetable tanned goat suede work for a mixed leather and suede vest?

It's tanned with a double face, so you could use the suede side on the back, and the leather side on the front. That should mean the leathers match more closely than mixing hides, as can be seen on this jacket.

The only trouble is that the Shackleton has relatively large panels, and these might be too big to work with the goatskin, which comes in smaller hides.

I just got my Shackleton back, I couldn’t be happier with the resize.

The first photos are the ones I sent to Sam so she could study the alteration to be made. Interesting to appreciate the work done.

Looks superb! The pre-alteration photo is great, shows just how well you've done on the weight loss front (I'm trying to lose a few stone myself at present, and it's not easy). Interesting they've been able to do a resize - that's one of the beauties of a simple pattern like this, I imagine. Great fit on you: I think when it comes time to order mine, I'm going to want to opt for one just a bit closer waist-length, but yours looks like the sort of perfect 'waistcoat fit' I have in mind. You wear it pretty much how I have in mind - as an alternative to a jacket in warmer weather.
