My condolences on your father. That hat is amazing. I've never seen a brim like that before. I have enough trouble putting binding on a round brim. What an artist.

More condolences, Ginseng. The thought you have put into this beautiful tribute will certainly add to and preserve the wonderful memories of your dad. Well done.

I was going to comment on the hat when the thread was first posted, but I wanted to be 100%truthful, and I wasn't sure if I liked the octogonal brim... As a tribute to your dad, and the multifaceted symbolism attached to the project, it is wonderful.

I looked at the photo which displays the brim many times, and I can now say that I really do like it. It is very unique, and the overall design of the hat is very well balanced. Your "design team" and maker did an excellent job. ;) The hat has an overall elegant look to it, and the jade hat pin is a nice accessory.

Do you wear the hat with a suit, or when you dress up? Take a shot of yourself modeling the hat if you would... I bet you pull off the look very well!

Great job!

Folks,

My father had been ill and passed earlier this year. Over the next few months, I looked for a way to remember and remind myself of what a man is and can be and of who he was and the legacy left to me. There have been numerous hats made for the future generations but fewer commemorating the prior generation.

And so I cast about for a craftsman to carry out my wish. Bob Jessee at Black Sheep Hat Works got the call.

Over the course of several weeks, he worked with me hand in hand, sharing and working out ideas, concepts, and symbols until finally I arrived at something that I felt expressed in felt, that which I could not properly express in words.

Here then, is the Hat for My Father. The simplicity of the specs belie the artistry that went into its execution.
  • 100% pure beaver felt in Black Cherry
  • Double finish with sateen crown, smooth brim
  • Bound edge, hand-dyed ribbon
  • Custom eight-sided dimensional brim
  • Teardrop crown
  • Antique chestnut sweatband
  • Customer-selected embroidered silk tip liner and complementary crown liner
  • Five-fold standard bow
  • Jade hat pin

Not only did Black Sheep Hat works do an incredible job, but you did as well in the creation of this hat. The effort and time you dedicated to this hat is very evident and is of great character. Thank you for sharing this family treasure with the rest of us.

Folks,

Thank you for all the kind words. I truly appreciate it and I know Bob does as well. As promised, here are some shots of the hat being worn. To complete the picture and provide a bit more visual context, I am wearing a traditional jacket.

I hope these show off the hat adequately.

Regards!

Ginseng, I don't know how I missed this thread when it was first posted, but I'd like to add my compliments, as well. The hat is gorgeous, and the thought and work you've put into the hat's elements speaks to your love for your father and what his legacy has brought you.

It is a fantastic piece of work. Bob did an outstanding job, and you are a son any father would be proud of.

Absolutely everything you could have hoped for, Ginseng. The photos are just spectacular; really showing the beauty, craftsmanship, and uniquely special aspects you designed into the piece. SO well done... as Frunobulax states above, you are a son any father would be proud of.

Thank you for the continued kind words. Lest you all think I'm a very serious person who made a very serious tribute to a very serious dad, here is a photo of me taken today while the family was out for lunch and coffee. My dad loved food and we had many a fine conversation over coffee and pastries. Enjoy!
