Bacchanalia, The word "bacchanalia" comes from Latin, borrowed from the term Bacchānālia, meaning feast of Bacchus. The term Bacchus is derived from the Greek god's name, Bakkhos.

While there is no direct ancient Latin translation for the modern term "Teetotal," as the concept originated with the 19th. century temperance movement, a Latin phrase that loosely conveys the idea of complete abstinence from alcohol is sine vino omnino. Not a phrase that would be in keeping with this thread:

Well done you. My particular penchant was French red wine, but I did like most of the spirits too. Perhaps the word like is more euphemistic, Tina suggested that I cut back. That hurt, so with bravado I declared that I could go without alcohol completely, no problem.

Hand on heart, I didn't waver and went without, but being honest, I have to admit I did twitch now and then. Having said that, one of the best motivators to stay on the wagon happened. Without dieting, as in meal size reduction or omitting the dessert and such like, in the first six weeks of abstention I lost just over twenty-five pounds in weight.

What a result, checking out why, I found that nutritionists describe alcohol as empty calories. This is the definition of empty calories that I discovered:

"Alcohol's calories are widely considered "empty calories" because they provide energy (7 calories per gram) but offer virtually no essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, fiber, or protein. This high caloric density, second only to fat, means alcoholic drinks can contribute significantly to daily calorie intake without benefiting the body nutritionally, often leading to weight gain if not accounted for in one's overall diet."

When an expensive suit that has been hanging in the wardrobe waiting for that weight loss promise that I will get around to, one day, almost suddenly fits, and fits without a squeeze or button strain, it's all the motivation that I ever needed, mind you, the extra shekels in the bank at the end of each month was also another reminder that perhaps that red wine might have been more than just an indulgence.

I totally agree, I slimmed down also, when for years those 32 waist pants were too snug, that was a incentive, I'll have a couple of glasses of wine over this festive period but the beer is definitely out and the quantity, I was a real ale lover also, but there comes a time, I feel healthier, when you've had a skinful and the hangover is worse than minor surgery, not good eh, and you mentioned extra shekels, that too, nice wine and spirits don't come cheap anymore

I've been the opposite of the stereotypical Scots-Irish drunkard most of my life. Sure, I'd have a beer or three when I was hanging out with my friends in my late teens, but I've never really acquired a taste for alcohol and I'd much rather have a Diet Coke or a good cup of coffee. That said, the last alcoholic beverage I had was just before the turn of the century while out to dinner with my late wife, her sister, and her late husband. So, yeah, it's been about 25-26 years.

Good job, but the "turn of the century" phrase hits hard........I have been hearing that lately as it has been 25 years....and a new one has come up from the "kids".....that refer to their grandparents as having been born "in the nineteen hundreds"!:rolleyes::(

The phrase "turn of the century" has become awfully confusing over the past twenty-five years. You youngsters should call it "turn of the millennium" so as not to get us even more mixed up.

I’ve been using it of late to describe some of my job experiences. “Well it started back around the Turn of the Century”. LOL

How many times do you have to tickle an octopus to make it laugh?
Ten-tickles. Of course it only has 8 of those.
So the first two were test-tickles!
