Rats,
Thanks for the smarts. Given that your avatar has you holding a Tommy gun, I doubt if I'd disagree with you publicly...
I put up a post a while back on the virtues of simple coffee orders. Does this post mean I think someone is less of a man ordering a...
I think "rule" is probably the wrong word and I shouldn't have used it.
Basically, I'm seeking opinions & comments on the topic, however deeply held or tongue in cheek they are. If you look at the post with the 101 list, there is a TON of tongue in cheek there. And re: the creases in khakis --...
Greetings,
I've got a blog and I just put up a post listing 101 Old School things.
I'd like to do post in the future about proper Old School dress ideas, suggestions, etc. (101 would be great, but so would 50 or 20) and I figured the minds here would be a great resource of opinions and...
I loved Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. Read most of the Doyle "canon" as a boy. Over the past few years I've enjoyed Robert Parker's Spenser stories. Vastly different from Holmes, of course, but great, great stuff.
Best food & drink to start day. (Not a work day, mind you, a leisurely day)
Food: Spanish tortilla like Mama used to make. Recipe here.
Followed by drink: bloody mary recipe here
Now it's important the meal is on the deck, while wearing a robe, and the weather is perfect. (Should be...
I just put a post on my blog regarding late night diners http://oldschoolrules.com/2011/08/15/find-the-perfect-late-night-diner/
After I posted it I asked myself, "I wonder if there's a thread about this at the Fedora." As usual, this forum did not disappoint. Seems we like much of the same...
I think the "appeal", if any, was it was during the depression and it was cheap, hot and easy to make.
I'm going to try some over the next few days so I'll give a first person report:D
Best,

I saw that story earlier. I wonder what the saltiness of the saltines would do to the taste. From the post you sited it seems it was a good thing. The song that is sung here http://oldschoolrules.com/2011/08/09/coffee-soup/ mentions saltines, too.

While the biscotti gets away from the depression era roots of this thing, I have to admit that sounds tasty. I think the key would be to make it in small amounts that could be eaten fairly quickly because even a biscotti is going to to "mush up" fast.

The shock with which this soup was greeted encouraged me to do a little more research that yielded... not much more. ;)
But it did bring up a video and a few recipes I hadn't seen, including an alcohol enhanced coffee soup. It was easier to put the stuff up on my blog under the entry "coffee...
@ Mike,
The difference is the degree to which the bread soaked and the way it is eaten, although I can understand your question. You'd have to see what coffee soup looks like in person to realize how odd it is.
@C-dot
Your father treats corn flakes and coffee the way I treat Mexican food. I...
You've inspired me to try the stuff myself, although it will have to wait because all we have in the house is whole wheat stuff and I don't think that's the best choice for this dish.
I'm still curious as to the origin of the stuff. All my grandparents came from Spain, but I'm pretty sure it's...
The John Calvert you mentioned just turned 100 years old on August 5, 2011. Still going strong and a legend amongst magicians; Mr. Calvert once toured the world with a massive, Old School, grand style magic show.

Has anybody heard of or eaten coffee soup? I remember my dad eating it a few times when I was kid (40+ years ago). It basically coffee poured over ripped up bread pieces with cream and sugar added.
Found a recipe here: http://www.food.com/recipe/coffee-soup-112622
I'm curious if anyone...
I've been lurking on forum for some time. Great place. It overlaps many of my own interests, so much thanks to all of you who have been here a while.
By way of introduction, I have a blog that concerns "Old School" things and here are a few entries that might appeal to you.
