coffee soup

Has anybody heard of or eaten coffee soup? I remember my dad eating it a few times when I was kid (40+ years ago). It basically coffee poured over ripped up bread pieces with cream and sugar added.

I'm curious if anyone knows anything about it, its origin, etc. I occasionally mention this soup to people and all I get is odd, puzzled looks.

Coffee soup was also a favorite of my father back in the 40s and 50s. I have it now and then - not bad stuff, particularly if you use good coffee (unlike the swill that passed for coffee back in the day).

You've inspired me to try the stuff myself, although it will have to wait because all we have in the house is whole wheat stuff and I don't think that's the best choice for this dish.

I'm still curious as to the origin of the stuff. All my grandparents came from Spain, but I'm pretty sure it's not a Spanish thing.

Oh, god.

A favourite of my father's is corn flakes with coffee poured over them. At the same time, he will dip his buttered toast into an accompanying cup of coffee, leaving little butter globs and toast crumbs in it. To make matters worse, he enjoys this meal standing up.

My mother *hates* it when people eat standing up, and like me, shes thoroughly grossed out by the coffee cereal concoction. If she ever caught him, she would be sure to smack him, so he saves it for when shes out of town... To this day lol

I would be interested to hear other womens' opinions, as I'm sure coffee soup is mens fare!

The difference is the degree to which the bread soaked and the way it is eaten, although I can understand your question. You'd have to see what coffee soup looks like in person to realize how odd it is.

Your father treats corn flakes and coffee the way I treat Mexican food. I love it; my otherwise perfect bride does not. This makes Mexican food my default choice on business trips.

I'm pretty sure that in addition to being mens fare, it's a depression*-based dish , if there is such a thing. (My late father was born in 1917)

It's not so much gross as it is odd looking, kind of like a dog that's so ugly it's cute.

I can definitely see this.

It still does not sound appetizing, but I will admit that my kneejerk "GROSS!!!" reaction was definitely influenced by C-dot's graphic description. LOL.

Quite popular among my relatives was leftover rice or cornbread in milk with sugar, which I have also always found very unappetizing.

Oh no, please say it isn't so. I love my coffee, and bread from time to time, but together, in the same bowl, lord no. Can't even eat cereal with milk or dunk my donuts. Just, no.

But hey, I wouldn't say no to that gorgeous looking big ole' scoop of coffee ice cream in the cone up above there!

The shock with which this soup was greeted encouraged me to do a little more research that yielded... not much more.

But it did bring up a video and a few recipes I hadn't seen, including an alcohol enhanced coffee soup. It was easier to put the stuff up on my blog under the entry "coffee soup".

South America's downtown cities are loaded with 'after work' coffee bars which really are, um, bars: they serve coffee laced with shots of booze ... every type of booze.

To be modern about it...this seems like a latte in a bowl with biscotti soaked in it. I mean, that's a lot of half and half!
I wonder if you fried the bread in sugar so it had a hard caramel coating on it first.....

While the biscotti gets away from the depression era roots of this thing, I have to admit that sounds tasty. I think the key would be to make it in small amounts that could be eaten fairly quickly because even a biscotti is going to to "mush up" fast.

I saw that story earlier. I wonder what the saltiness of the saltines would do to the taste. From the post you sited it seems it was a good thing. The song that is sung here http://oldschoolrules.com/2011/08/09/coffee-soup/ mentions saltines, too.

Oh god.

Reminds me of my grandfather, only he did it with tomato soup. He especially liked the 3-cracker packages, because he could pound them with his fist and dump the resulting dust into the soup.

Even with alcohol, it don't entice me (thanks, dad.) I think coffee soup is, shall we say, an acquired taste?
