Great Irvin!
Sadly, those of us built for rugby not cricket will never find an original to fit a size 48 chest!
I sometimes look whistfully at originals but eventually think why have it if I can't wear it?
Nice note on zips; how well do Aero get around that problem?
Last words...
I bet his last words were "Bugger!" in true Ozzy/Irwin style!
They sure don't make too many like him - although I saw something the other day featuring a crazy guy from southern Africa playing with deadly snakes (he got bit by one, went to hospital and was back out playing in 3...
Good show, eh?
Yes, England is the ideal place to indulge the passions of most on this site!
Try also Ede & Ravenscroft (Cambridge and Chancery Lane).
For shirts, try Messrs. Harvie & Hudson, Jermyn Street.
Normandy
I have visited several of the Normandy Beaches and gravesites; similarly moving places and - sadly - even closer to modern times.
Also, the American Airmen's Cemetery just outside Cambridge is a moving tribute to those who did not return from the many raids launched from the fields...
May I mention Pakeman, Catto & Carter? They are a firm of Gentleman's Outfitters in the Cotswold town of Cirencester, England. I bought my first items from them as a younger man studying at The Royal Agricultural College, just down the road.
I now live in NZ and still shop there; it is just the...
Co Ed Boarding School
I was at a CoEd boarding school by age 15, 400 miles away from my parents house.
The rest, a gentleman leaves to his reader's imaginations!;)
Covert Coats
They are a classic part of any (slim!) gentleman's wardrobe. The black velvet collars are a left-over from the French Revolution and were a way of expressing sympathy for the fate of the Aristocracy in France.
If you would like one, there is a very fine gentleman's outfitter in...
Very Good!
Nice jackets - and yes, Aero are the best I think. I have a "Real Deal" Aero A2 which I love. I am awaiting sheepskin samples from them before ordering a B3 or a D1.
I have seen a number of Eastman products which are not bad either, but not I think quite as good as Aero.
Lucky!
You guys in the States are so lucky!
I now live in NZ, where the selection of clothes - even modern ones - is very poor.
In the UK, where I could get most of the things from Orvis and so on, the prices would be same numbers but in Sterling! So a US$550 jacket becomes a GBP550...
Covert coat and a heavy tweed cape with Inverness cape.
Covert coat must have black velvet collar, of course - mustn't forget those beheaded in La Revolution!
"If I was half as ugly as you, Sergeant Major, I'd be a poster boy for a prophylactic! "
No, but RM Williams in Australia make "RM's Own" which uses natural ingredients.
I have found it very good - and you can buy it from www.rmwilliams.com.au
CBI Mod
Hi
It is not unlike the one Aero market as a "CBI Theatre Modified" A2, is it?
Looks lovely though, I must say! Also it is nice to see someone take the plunge without obsessing over whether the diameter of the thread is a correct match for the original!!
I often wonder what the...
ELC Air Comfort
Hi
Anyone seeking a "bomber jacket" without being desperate for pinpoint accurate reproduction could do a lot worse than ELC's "Air Comfort" - a sort of hybrid A2 style, with a fur collar (quite like the CBI theatre modified A2's) but with more useful lining, pockets etc...
Nice Jacket, Grant!
Also nice provenance!
I think maybe now that I live in NZ I should shop local! I have an ELC B2 cap in redskin, which is very nice, I must say - although the pile is definitely shorter than the regulation 0.5" in places.
"And he gave it for his opinion, that whoever could make two ears of corn, or two blades of grass, to grow upon a spot of ground where only one grew before, would deserve better of mankind, and do more essential service to his country, than the whole race of politicians put together."...
Sadly, no, but.....
in the best "Great Escape" style, you could (ahem) copy one from someone?
"Why do I drink champagne for breakfast? Doesn't everybody?"
Well spotted, that man!
Looks like areally smart piece of work; I'll give them a shout when they get back from hols!
Anyone know why RMNZ stopped making their version?
May I recommend something to warm your gramophone and get those toes tapping?
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, a particularly good offering on Stereophonic Compact Disc, "Glenn Miller: The Centennial Collection"
The label is Bluebird, catalogue # 82876-59104-2. The set includes a CD of all GM's...
