Check out the photos on page 217 of "The Non-Shorpy Web Allstars" thread on the "Hats" forum. Besides hats, what do all the guys have in common? Pipes. And they all look happy.
Welcome to the club. Now that you're properly addicted you can start scouting around this forum for your grail color and blowing unprecedented amounts of money with the custom folks. Enjoy yourself!
My advice would be to just enjoy it. Half the people I hear these days complaining about the merest trace of smoke are probably dying of stress-related anxieties. All part of the modern puritanism.
Stay away from the Ebay offerings, unless you want to blow $40-$50.00 on a paper hat. FedOregon's suggestions are all good, but you might also consider Peters Bros. and Sunbody Hats, both of which are in your own home state. PB in Ft. Worth have straws, but they also do some very nice hemps, and...
I remember you spoke of this some time back, and you were absolutely right. I found out that you have to wash them the first few times in Woolite, and after that they seem to be okay.
Exactly what I ordered. What's also nice is that they have a couple of extra beltloops more than most other jeans. They really make a difference in the feel when wearing, especially with the higher waist.
Given the current state of affairs in Wash, D.C., especially with regard to the current isolationism, I wouldn't be betting on the strength of the dollar in the futures market.
I wish somebody would post a review of the Noble House jacket. They got some bad press here a few years ago but I'd like to hear something more recent. That photo and the price are just so damned tempting. Every so often I go back and look at it and ask myself, "How bad can it be?" (Silly...
I think I went down one inch and they fit fine, but it was a while ago so I'm a little fuzzy. I'll let you know how the new ones fit when they arrive in a day or so.
Ha! Pizza Rustica's still there and going strong last time I checked. Yeah, the weather at this time of year is really miserable (Norman Mailer once described it as being similar to having a naked, sweaty 400 lb. woman lying on top of you). Oddly enough, though, it generally isn't as bad as...
I would add to what RJR says above that BB is probably one of the only successful dealers in that business. Other than him, there are a few dealers on Ebay that members have dealt with: some seem to have had good experiences with them and some not. As far as custom hatters go, the problem is not...
I just ordered another pair of Wrangler Original Cowboy-cut jeans from Shepler's. I got a pair a few years back and wore them to death. 14.75 oz. indigo denim, 11" rise, deep pockets made of soft cotton, all for $22.00. Probably the best deal around on denim and, oh, those high rises feel good.
If you get this together, don't forget they'll do custom jobs at no extra cost. I recently got an oak-colored 4" brim hat cut down to 2 3/4", and refashioned into a fedora style with a brown edging and a brown leather band. I was really pleasantly surprised to find there was no extra charge...
Ditto. Funny, but when I first got it I wore it only with my black get-ups (black shoes, belt, etc.), but I started wearing it with a brown leather jacket last winter and found that it looked equally good with brown basics. Really useful color.
Come to think of it, I'm awaiting a pair of AE's...
