Have been wearing Caron's 1934 classic "Pour un Homme" lately; really amazing how vintage--and yet modern--it is. Not a big lavender fan, but in this one it is really nice, once it settles down.
I have to say that on this topic--or slightly off this topic--that the clothes that David Manners wears in the original The Mummy were spectacular--there was a dinner jacket that he wears, the cut of which takes your breath away....
For any SoCal Loungers, there is a wonderful oil painting of McSorley's in the Huntington Library collection in San Marino (near Pasadena). Painted in 1928 by artist John Sloan, it is called 'McSorley's Cats" and yes, the dust was there even then. I love the place and actually made it a stop...
I just rewatched a great movie from 1984--Alan Rudolph’s Choose Me is a wonderful, exceptionally original film. With a close-knit cast that is comprised of an ex-prostitute barkeep (Lesley Ann Warren), an escaped mental patient who is a pathological liar (Keith Carradine), and a radio talk show...
Just watched "Blues in the Night," that 1940's Warner Brothers' film noir musical--yes, film noir musical. Songs--including title song, by Arlen and Mercer. A must see.
My favorite is that old chestnut--actual chestnuts roasted over an open fire. We have a great roasting pan and chestnut scoring knife from Williams-Sonoma (http://www.williams-sonoma.com/search/results.html?words=de%20buyer%20chestnut%20roasting%20pan). They really are delicious, are fun to...
One of my favorites is the 1932 classic "The Mummy." The cut of the tuxedo that David Manners wears literally takes my breath away. Vera West is credited with costumes which ususally means gowns worn by the women in the cast. I don't know who Manners' tailor was but the results were great.
Around this time of year, Christmas episodes of favorite TV shows are great to watch. My favorite, which I watched last night, is the Avenger's holiday offering, "Too Many Christmas Trees" which features Steed and Mrs. Peel in Dickensian garb. Steed gets a Christmas card from Cathy Gale, doing...
Just watched the 1940 sleeper "Second Chorus" with Fred Astaire and Paulette Goddard--great movie, not a particularly big hit in its day. Wonderful scenes with Artie Shaw who plays himself in the movie--this seems to have been to Artie Shaw what "Sun Valley Serenade" and "Orchestra Wives" were...
