    Holding up Shirt Sleeves

I wear sleeve-garters to hold back extra fabric if the shirt is too long (their original purpose), or to hold back the entire sleeve if I'm doing dirty work (their adapted purpose). But there's no reason why you can't just wear them for decoration.

    Holding up Shirt Sleeves

They're called sleeve-garters. Handy little things. I have two pairs.

    Any writers?

I've started writing another "Haines & Holloway" historical detective story. As with a lot of my story ideas, this one came to me during several bouts of brain-melting boredom. It matured and evolved over the past fortnight or so, and I'm penning the opening pages right now. Literally...

    What's In Your Bathroom Library?

Appropriately enough, I keep a copy of "Uncle John's Great Australian Bathroom Reader" in my toilet. It was a present from a friend a long time ago.

    Bow Ties

Well. I bought my first bowtie today. Never really been one for bowties, but I figured I'd buy one and at least learn how to tie it. It's a neat little cobalt blue tie. Very neat. I'm vaguely familiar with the tying of a bowtie, but I never pulled one off successfully (by successfully, I...

    WW2 toddler clothing

During the war, wasn't cloth under strict rationing? Perhaps that explains the thin babysuits.

    You Tube, 1941 Style

Aaah. I'm amazed this wasn't posted on the FL before now, to be honest. It's a very famous film-clip. I remember the first time I watched it, I couldn't stop laughing. It's a wonderful bit of comedy.

    "New styled" Fedoras

I took knowing one's size as being a given, so I didn't bother adding it onto the list! But yes, knowing your size (in a variety of sizing scales) is important. Not all hats are sized the same way. Some go by traditional sizes, some go by centimeters, some go by the good old fashioned S/M/L...

    Hat care tools??

Ahhh. Yeah, all my hats are dark (brown, grey, black, etc). So no issues there. The one really light hat I have is my straw boater, and I don't use my brush on that.

    "New styled" Fedoras

I agree, black can be somewhat limiting. In my opinion, brown and grey are the two most versatile colours. You can wear those two with almost anything, and you won't look weird. When buying hats second hand, the most important things to check for are: Condiiton of the felt (stains, moth-holes...

    "New styled" Fedoras

Hi Jeff, I started wearing fedoras a couple of years back, and I started with the cheap 'fashion fedoras' that are so popular these days. If that's all that's available to you, I suggest starting with a classic colour. Dark blue, black, brown, grey or white. That, at least, will look good...

    Hat care tools??

Scotty, does the colour of the bristles on a hatbrush really matter? I'm just curious. My hatbrush has blond/light-coloured bristles.

    Hat care tools??

I use a traditional curved hatbrush. Bought one for $5 at the local hat-shop. Works a treat.

    Art Deco Shanghai Reborn

Like almost everywhere in China, Shanghai would've been heavily affected by the Chinese Civil War. From the 1920s until 1949, that's a long time to be fighting. As much as they liked to kid themselves, the Nationalists (who ran the country from the abolishment of the Monarchy in 1912, until the...

Wearing my Fedora for the first time any advice

Thank you. That's the attitude I took & take, to everything I wear. And if you do it with confidence, people will respond positively. I've had countless people tell me how good my hats and/or general attire is, and I've had at least three people ask me where they can buy hats.

Wearing my Fedora for the first time any advice

Be brave and ballsy. Dress up sharp as a tack. Smack on the Feddie and head out into the world. If someone gives you evil eyes or any kind of lip - Just tell yourself that you look awesome, because you do. They're jealous because they don't have the dedication, balls, courage and...

    Walking Sticks & Canes.

Hi There, The important thing about a walking-stick (apart from where to buy one, quality etc), is its SIZE. A well-fitting walking-stick should reach to just around hip-level. The arm should be slightly bent, as should the wrist. If the arm is straight down and the wrist is bent at 90...

Help with {date or identify} a hat please.....!

I always say that a trilby has a thinner brim and curls up at the back. The fedora has a wider, slightly floppier brim with less of (or no) backwards curl/lip.
