    The loss of occasion

A funeral is for the family of the deceased. Clothing, makeup or behavior that attracts attention strikes the wrong note.

Shorts with wingtips, a sport jacket?

I never went to prep school. This is what shorts with a sports jacket reminds me of: http://www.80srockphotos.com/fcWebApp/product_images/2768153-R5-E112.jpg Ready for the corporate charity fundraiser!

    Hat manners?

If there is no place to put the hat down, I can see the reason for keeping it on. But wearing a hat on a Saturday at the office or at the table in a restaurant strikes me as a little silly. Are you trying to keep the sun out of your eyes in your cubicle?

Cooking Lesson Learned the Hard Way

Do throw it on the floor and stamp out the fire! (And keep your lids and some baking soda near the stove.)

Cooking Lesson Learned the Hard Way

Don't keep your towels and potholders too close to a gas burner.

    The loss of occasion

"The poor" includes a wide variety of people. Some have their own homes and air conditioning(!); others are doing OK working off the books. If we are talking about those who are one step from living on the street, though, I wouldn't expect them to spend anything on fancy duds they won't need...

    The loss of occasion

If it's a funeral, you must know some, if not most, of the people there, and they know you, too. Surely they know that those pants with not that many stains and holes are the best pants that you, the poor but hardworking laborer, own, and that being 21, you outgrew your last suit, bought when...

    The I'm-too-good-for-this-job Attitude

I think we need to see realities before we can change them. I am saying that sheltered, inexperienced people don't have a good idea of what is required to succeed. (I sure didn't.)

Should tobacco usage scene's be deleted?

I was sorry to read about your mother, Joie. I can't say there ought to be a law against cigarettes, but it wouldn't hurt my feelings if they all went away tomorrow.

Cooking Lesson Learned the Hard Way

Kind of like a sacrificial anode...I think of pepper oil as more of an acid burn. Milk also has a lot of sugar in it; maybe that helps, too.

    The I'm-too-good-for-this-job Attitude

Hmmm. I remember reading some of the same things about Gen Xers ten years ago (with the exception of the helicoptor parents). It sounds pretty much like the attitude of privates who are going to whip the mongrel hordes over the summer, newlyweds who are going to raise model children, and those...

    Under Eye Circles

You may have little puffs of fat under your eyes (I do). I've read that plastic surgery can get rid of them. Maybe they could do that at the same time you have septoplasty (if you were to have that done).

Cooking Lesson Learned the Hard Way

I vaguely remember handling some hot peppers without gloves, getting pepper oil in my eye and getting it in cuts. I just had to suffer until the feeling went away. Whenever I eat something very spicy, I chase it with bread or a tortilla. It helps absorb the hot oil, whereas water just spreads...

    The I'm-too-good-for-this-job Attitude

I would call this kindness, not charity. I think a lot of people feel entitled to charity; being too proud to take it is old fashioned. My relatives who availed themselves of public and familial charity were (are) unwilling to wean themselves from it. They seemed to think they were entitled to...

    The loss of occasion

My sister wore an aqua track suit to our sister's funeral. She was more maudlin than anyone there--over someone she never got along with. I just took it as her being a flake.

    The I'm-too-good-for-this-job Attitude

Employers need to be realistic, too. In a job market of something like 4% unemployment, jerks aren't going to keep employees around for long, especially in a field where it's hard to find help. For about 10 or 20 years now, engineering companies have treated engineers as a commodity: they hire...

    Shoe leather scrape…help!

I have some cracks in my shoes. Can a cobbler fix that, too?

    The I'm-too-good-for-this-job Attitude

I don't think this attitude is peculiar to young adults. As I mentioned, the ladies I interviewed were my age and older. I have friends and relatives my age who just don't want to work, or want the success of a great job without all the sacrifices, or are constantly wishing for a dream job...

    Women doing mens jobs.

My father was a welder. He had the little holes in his shirts and a year-round tan from the arc. He always found welding work, and the pay was good. From what I hear, it still is. However, he worked in heat, in cold, in close spaces, on ladders, and in dangerous areas. He was scalded once and on...
