    FL brain storm request

Prune rosebushes at the city park (my father has done this). Why pruning roses? First, manly dudes don't usually do stuff together, in my experience (well, except drink beer and chase women). But pruning all those roses takes a combined effort. Second, the manly men I know love roses: my father...

    Gentleman's clothing - in 1807? Help?

According to The Birth of the Modern (1815 to 1830) by Paul Johnston (sp?), prior to 1815, gentlemen wore breeches and stockings, rouge, powder and wigs, while men of lower classes wore trousers (and probably none of the other accoutrements considered feminine today). Brighter colors were in...

The lack of Pedestrian culture in America

In Denver, there are local buses (which stop about every two blocks), limited buses (which stop about every one to 1/2 mile) and express buses (which make a few stops out in the boonies before heading downtown).

    Location, Location, Location

Denver Several Perry Mason movies were shot in Denver. I've also read that Denver was used for films set in Chicago. However, Denver is a lot cleaner than Chicago, and they had to stop using Denver because of the lack of a fresh coat of grime.

Mass Grave of Holocaust Victims Found in Ukraine

As former Soviet citizens, Odessans are probably used to being silent out of fear. I used to have a friend who was from a city near Odessa. She said that during the war with Afghanistan in the 1980s, I think, officials said that young men were dying in "soccer accidents." A lot of Ukrainian...

Mass Grave of Holocaust Victims Found in Ukraine

From the Wall Street Journal, June 5, 2007: KIEV, Ukraine -- A mass grave holding the remains of thousands of Jews killed by the Nazis has been found in southern Ukraine near the site of what was once a concentration camp, a Jewish community representative said Tuesday. The grave was found...

What would you do with a rude business?

Understood. I try to avoid doing business with people who are rude to me in any capacity. If I were their customer, how would they handle a return or a dispute? Maybe people who treat cold callers with disdain nevertheless act as though the customer is always right, or maybe they handle...

What would you do with a rude business?

We don't keep rude, obnoxious clients where I work. High maintenance ones, yes, but jerks, no. One of the benefits of having a thousands of clients.

The lack of Pedestrian culture in America

That's kind of like driving through Wyoming. People in cars wave at each other as they pass, which is every few hours or so. BTW, I like your avatar.

What would you do with a rude business?

That's true. Going for the kill isn't a good sales tactic.

What would you do with a rude business?

I have had calls from telemarketers who were very persistent in trying to get through to the partner or principal in charge. Nevertheless, I've never lost my patience with one. But it is easier to be respectful with someone who is respectful towards me.

What would you do with a rude business?

As I read it, you are calling certain businesses for work, they are rude to you, and you are wondering if you should give them your patronage. Correct? I wouldn't. All they have to say is "I'm sorry, but we don't take sales calls. Please put us on your do-not-call list." At that point, the...

How to be a Golden Era Kid

If I Were to Write a Dangerous Book for Grownups... Handle trespassers and obnoxious neighbors yourself instead of calling the police. Do aerials in a crowded ballroom. Use public transportation at 11:00 p.m. on a Friday night. Bet it all on the long shot. Pet strange dogs. Invite...

The lack of Pedestrian culture in America

My grandfather and his brother walked from Oklahoma to southern Missouri--I forget the distance and the purpose of the trip, but it was several days' trek. This would have been c. 1915.

    The I'm-too-good-for-this-job Attitude

I got a note from the Post Office yesterday. It stated that my mail is being held at the post office until I clear the path to my mailbox. There are two flower stems that have fallen over the path and some leaves from other plants that bushed out over the walk. Through snow and sleet and dark of...
