Hair-weaving was a common Victorian hobby. Lots of people did it. Some people probably made a modest living out of it. As in "You give me your wife's hair, and I'll weave it and put it into a locket for you".
These days, I think some people find it creepy, but back in Victorian times, it was...
Hair-woven watch-chains were common lover's tokens. A wife or a girlfriend/sweetheart/fiancee, would save her hair and then weave it into a rope or cord to give to her husband/boyfriend, as a cute little momento.
But also, it was common to cut hair off of a dead body, weave it into a rope and...
Gin&Tonics, I noticed the Chinese coin fob on your watch-chain.
Were you also a ship's carpenter as a lad, and spend your time doing a lot of handwriting, copying out the Encyclopedia Britannica?
Thanks, Feraud, and Rue.
The job is nearly done. I have a copy of the original manual now (printed off teh intranetz). I still need to clean off some gummy old glue residue (it's being stubborn, but it's coming off slowly!)
After that, the big thing - The slide plate.
A lengthy discussion...
I also hate moths. The damn things ate a hole in one of my waistcoats!
Fortunately, it wasn't one that I prize, so its loss is no great issue...but still. It's frustrating.
That's a very pretty watch, of good quality, Highlander.

Last year, my grandmother died at the age of 97. She left this world with her 1951 Singer 99k sewing-machine in the hands of her family...
In honour of her memory, I decided to try and restore this machine to health and functionality.
It took about a month of work, but it's done!
I had...
I think I've heard that interview before, Liz. There are other interviews floating around, from other officers who survived the sinking as well. They're all very interesting.
If my experience of Chinese history, culture and customs is anything to go by, I don't think there's a big retro community there. At least, not amongst the native inhabitants. In my experience, native-born Chinese have a phobia of old things (particularly, things that have been passed down...
Despite a lack of skills and experience, I have finished the backing!
Now, to attach the two front halves of the waistcoat to it. I'm doing this one half at a time, to make things easier. Starting with the sides, then the shoulders, last.
Left underarm seam is complete!
All this beautiful continental jazz.
Was jazz/big-band/swing really banned during the Nazi era in Europe? How heavily did the Nazis crack down on that kind of stuff?
