I've had and still have converse. Think of them as 'street slippers' for when I want to go out to do something that isn't a big deal and won't involve a lot of walking. Quality is what you pay for, and they are cheap. I've had pairs that lasted a couple of months, and pairs that lasted for 5...
Yeah, Bronson and Bob Dong are awesome value for money. They seem to have all the right features. I don't know how sizing and fit works out though. Just looking at photos, you'd have to be a real nylon jacket nerd to call them out as not BR.
AFAIK, only BR is making repros with the correct nylon weight/weave/color.
This may or may not be important to you.
Diamond Dave I would steer well clear of. His L-2 repros are, by his own admission, 'cut to give a more modern fit' whilst also claiming to be '100% accurate reproductions'...
I don't like the Son of Stag model. I wouldn't normally body shame anyone, but he's putting himself out there as a model, so he's fair game.
I don't like the too long body and sleeves on that A-1 clone, necessitated by him wearing low rise pants that aren't belted tight enough. Droopy belt...
@Dav, I'm loving that Aero!
For sure, using black fleece was scraping the bottom of the barrel due to desperation during the war, but almost 80 years later it makes for a really cool distinctive repro. Well done Aero. When they actually bother to offer it on their website instead of as a special...
@coloradorider,
Thank you for your interesting reply. It all sounds reasonable to me.
I think you also mention something that a couple of people have tried to explain to me about 'the magic'.
I've always found it difficult to accept that GW A-2s are 'the most accurate reproductions of wartime...
@coloradorider,
I think that's a fair comment.
TBH, I don't remember the names of members who slammed me, there were too many. I can admit that I don't come across well a lot of the time though.
I was interested in why GW was so well regarded, not because of the price (which is at the higher...
@cloudylemonade,
Ken posts pretty regularly at VLJ, and often starts new threads. I'm not saying he shouldn't, but it's not really 'occasionally'.
I appreciate that you don't want to step on Thurston's toes here.
Three 'special' jackets only available to VLJ members isn't favoritism? Ok...
@seres,
I joined VLJ a few years back when its members were giving Ken and Aero a hard time about the quality and accuracy of their jackets.
I posted a query about one complaint against Aero A-2s.
The guy (Sean?) 'A-2 patches' (who I later discovered claims to make the painted leather...
@seres,
My apologies if I misunderstood you. How else to interpret that Ken will offer them here if he needs extra sales?
Ken doesn't need to offer them here because he gets enough sales through VLJ?
I've got a rack of Aero jackets, but if I want one of these 3 special jackets I have to be a...
@Dr H,
Yes, perhaps you're right. Maybe I'm overthinking it.
I also am a member of VLJ, but I never bother to post. I find it to be a small collection of amateur enthusiasts self-proclaimed as 'experts' endlessly recycling the same talking points in a tour de force of navel gazing.
There's...
@seres, actually, your right.
That's three new flight jackets in the last 6 months or so that have been announced on VLJ, with pre-orders offered on two, but no mention on the Lounge?
I really do guess that Aero doesn't want your custom.
Weird.
@robrinay, thanks for posting that!
If only it was my size! Excellent condition and price! Clearly, made from seal goat. Maybe Ken doesn't have to worry about the leather specified in the contract, maybe Aero just ignored it and used surplus goat from A-2 production?
On the other hand, with a...
Another interesting point is that Ken is speculating that these jackets were made with surplus A-2 production russet and seal hides based on some original samples.
Apparently (and really, I only know what I just read), Russia Leather was produced in red and black.
I wonder if the old veg...
Reading that whole Wikipedia page I'm of the opinion that 'Russian Leather' in the contract mistakenly refers to 'Russia Leather' tanning process of cow hide.
Given that this kind of leather was used for Russian officers boots and military equipment, it would be logical to use it for flight...
@David Conwill,
I found this;
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia_leather
So I'm thinking that the term 'Russian Leather' used in the original Aero contract didn't refer necessarily to leather from Russia (although hides may have been delivered) but rather to leather (in Russia usually...
There's also this thread about a Korean War era People's Liberation Army (Air Force) jacket;
https://www.vintageleatherjackets.org/threads/chinese-plaaf-korean-war-leather-flight-jacket.22594/
These jackets featured so much in iconic Chinese propaganda posters of MiG pilots. I'd love one of...
