I think this might be one of those situations where one thinks, "Gee, I just can't get this hat to shape the way I want it to. It must be that I don't possess the 'touch'." Then, one gets ahold of a true, high quality vintage fedora and discovers that it is no problem at all.

I failed to mention that in the case of your hat, I built up the felt a little higher and then carefully sanded it back to level. It's almost like doing a drywall patch - just totally different. :p
Note that what you're really trying to achieve is a stretch of the outside circumference of the brim. Carefully work the brim edge in order to flatten it some and relax the flanging some without flattening it too much or overly stressing the straw. Keep dampening it as you go because it dries...
