I have always just worn 'em without regard. I live in the South where mildew & mold make up the vast majority of the biomass!
We laugh at Aspergillus! Bwahahahaha!
Although I read (from the Art Collectors POV) that sometimes what looks like foxing (Ferric OXide) or mildew not always is...
Not at all, IMO, tho' there are some here who will adamantly disagree. I too wear a 7 3/8, but if I see a 7 1/4 that looks good- no worries- I prep the hat, including treating the sweat w/ both lexol & "shoe stretch" leather stretcher, meant to loosen up the leather for stretching. I slap it on...
I keep a standing search for the keywords "Demon Hanover" but have turned up almost exclusively 4o yr. old press photos. I would love to find another color or weight hat or a tie. I've seen naught in the past eight years but for a very few hats.
PS~ here is one that got by me recently.
ALSO...
The demon!
I got this one some years back on th' 'bay.
A real favorite of mine. Other than your hat I think I have only seen one or two- at the most- up for sale.
I think them to be somewhat of a rare bird.
It is one of the rarest, hard to find, lids I have ever found.
As seen above the box alone went for $550.
The Hambletonian Society itself, so far as I know, owns a box, but not a hat. I have NEVER seen a tie.
The hat itself is no great shakes. Nice enough, comparable to an Adam...
How sad. I remember hearing of that auction, here in the provinces.
Still & all, if these turn for less than 1,000 USD I will eat my hat!
As I recall Sr. had quite a grapefruit atop his shoulders. Curious
to see what Jr. measured. [huh]
Agreed. I would guess somewhere in the neighborhood of two to three grand, given the provenance. Now if they were Sr.'s hats... whole 'nother ballgame.
Anyone else care to prognosticate a final price? Not including the 20% "buyer's fee" the house will collect.
