It's that time of year again. If you flip back one page, you'll see the postings I made about my grandmother's death.
Today is the 7th of May, 2014. Had my grandmother survived another three years, today would have been her 100th birthday.
I can't stand cigarette smoke. It makes me cough. I hate the smell. And I'm a mild asthmatic, so I reckon I'm more sensitive to it than most. My dad is an ex-smoker. When he found out that my brother had taken it up (I think he's stopped now), he went absolutely INSANE. He was yelling at him at...
This machine was made in 1936. So it's almost 80 years old. And it is absolutely bomb-proof. I broke at least three needles on it in one sitting once, while trying to sew on buttonholes, and it just shrugged them off. I'm currently using it to make a patchwork quilt using scraps of fabric left...
Buying things "as-is", or "for parts" or "display-only" or something like that, and then getting it fully functional again and using it, is a lot of fun. Extremely satisfying.
I bought this Singer 128k V.S. machine at a flea-market in London in 2012. That's what it looked like when I bought...
A little unconventional for this thread, but I'm thinking of making a patchwork quilt. I've never done this before. My brain tells me that it's very easy, although I am wondering just how true that is. I have no real 'plan'. Just a size of quilt that I want to make. I'm producing the first layer...
The best things in life,
To you were just loaned,
So how can you lose,
What you've never owned?
- Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries
Interesting conundrum, anyway.
Wonders never cease!
After talking with a friend of mine, it happens by chance that she has spare long bobbins at home! She has agreed to give them to me! She doesn't have a machine that can use them, and she'd rather that I take them and complete my restoration instead. So she's giving them...
I found an umbrella today. Literally. And it didn't cost me a cent and it's brand-new.
I picked it up on the tram on the way home. Nobody fessed up to owning it, so I took it.
I can't post photos until my photobucket bandwidth resets itself, but today, I bought a key for a Singer sewing-machine, and a tin put-put boat. It's been ages since I've seen one of these little tin boats, and they're so much fun to play with. I used to have one as a kid. Water, copper and a...
I'll try the hot water method and bend the scales. But I won't disassemble the razor. I don't trust myself to reassemble it.
My other two straights are an unnamed German one, and a Joseph Rodgers & Sons. I had the option to buy a second J.R. & Sons razor about a week ago, but I turned it down...
The scales are made of celluloid (or some variety of plastic. I'm fairly sure it's celluloid). I think bending the scales would be the easiest and safest answer.
