Well, I think I arrived at my own answer. They are not shell leather. They had such little wear when I got them that creases had not developed - but I wore them Saturday and below shows the result.
Still, fairly well-made (they have a better look, feel and 'depth' than corrected grain would)...
Thanks, Bill! :)
That Bostonian logo design has a decidedly '70s feel about it. There was still some high quality merchandise being made in that era and I'll modify my guess to early- to mid-seventies but no later than that.
I had to go back a few pages to see your question. Sorry for the delay.
I misted the brim (both sides) with water from a spray bottle and kind of massaged it into the straw to get it flexible. Then, I coaxed the shape into it (more curl up on sides, more drop at rear) while using a hair dryer...
For what it's worth; I wear a variety of fragrances from old Clubman aftershave to Jovan Musk (drug store stuff, I know, but I like it) to Canoe, Aramis, Obsession... no one really ever says they notice one way or the other.

Seeking your info...
I'll photograph them tomorrow but I picked up a pair of brogues today that sure seem like shell cordovan. They seem (to me) way too durable and well, shell-like, to be corrected grain - but I'm still in the learning stages.
The thing is that they are labeled, "Stafford"...

Glad to see other people posting shoe pix. I'm not going to slow down with my contributions no matter what, but it's better when there's more participation in a thread. :D

Here's my latest pick-ups (to be sold at some point):

At first, I thought, "Jeez, that is poorly written and by someone whose expertise doesn't qualify him to opine on such matters".
But then I SAW the man...

Yeah, Benny, those Crosbys are BUILT. Fantastic looking! You must be thrilled.
And the only thing better than the fact that they are NOS is that you are actually wearing them as they were intended. Good for you! :eusa_clap
