I agree with T Jones. My first 3 hats were cheapos -- I ended up getting rid of all 3 and regretted having bought them. I'd have done better -- and ultimately saved money -- by buying a decent fur-felt hat as my first.
I suppose the trick with looking on eBay is finding something that's in...
What..? Are you guys waiting for me to be the first one to buy one of these 30X Akubras so we know how they compare?? :D
I was hoping someone already had one when I started the thread. I'm seriously considering getting one...but it's not like I need another hat! I'm working on coming up with...
While a re-blocking by a pro hatter is likely to be the best way to go, I've used that very same Hat Shaper as gtdean with excellent results.
It's great for restoring a blocked hat to a straight-sided open crown, with no taper -- which is how I prefer my western hats before I re-block them...
Web descriptions of their 30X hat indicate that Akubra imports the beaver fur, which implies they then combine it with their usual rabbit fur to produce the hat bodies themselves. Presumably, they certainly have that capability.
And, as some comments here have noted, why go to the trouble of...
I really like the David Morgan Adventurer. Although I got mine for less $$ from a website called culturedcowboy.com.
It's a sturdy but light open crown that falls into your dimensional ballpark. Very easy to shape with a little steam or water. It's a nice medium-dark brown -- I did replace...
I have a bunch of rabbit fur Akubras, which I love. They're comfortable, easy to rework with steam, and seem solid and sturdy. But I've never really had a chance to compare with beaver/part-beaver hats.
From those with more hat experience, what would you say are the qualitative and wear...
Reviving this thread (from 2012 in the General Attire subsection) to see if any of you gents in fact has an Akubra Pro 30X western hat (this one is 30% beaver/70% rabbit).
The current price from Everything Australian is under $235 (US) including shipping, which sounds pretty good to me. I...
Reviving this thread to see if anybody in fact has an Akubra Pro 30X western hat (this one is 30% beaver.) The current price from Everything Australian is under $235 (US) including shipping, which sounds pretty good to me. I don't think there are any/many western hats with that much beaver...
I wear my dark brown Akubra "Longmire" style hat with pretty much any outerwear, including Levis denim jacket, brown bomber jacket, blue or brown parka coats, light-tan barn coat, brown leather Indy jacket.
Even if it's warm enough to not need a jacket or coat, I think it goes with pretty...
I'm not an expert. But you probably want to stick to your actual size.
For my first fur-felt hat (Akubra), I measured my head per guidelines and decided I wore a 58 (7 1/4). Because it wasn't oval-y enough, and I didn't know then how to tweak the shape, it seemed snug (front to back). So for...
Quiet on the Western Front..?
This thread has been dormant for a bit. Here are a few of my new or newly re-done western hats.
After 3 seasons, I decided I liked the hat worn by the title character on the TV series LONGMIRE. The Loden Akubra Rough Rider I got is darker than the show hat, but I...
