Alarming!
Uh-ohh! This was the most alarming thing in the news story:
"Akubra chief financial officer Roy Wilkinson said the company had to cut its rabbit skin processing operation, and import fur already processed. He said the company was not making money and needed to cut costs to stay in...

I'm a little surprised nobody mentioned that vintage-style standby, the Akubra Federation IV. Fairly tall crown (open, easy to shape any way you like), no taper, mid-size brim (though not overwelt). Comes in several colors, about $140 including shipping (for the regular grade Imperial felt)...
Funny, I've never had one of my Akubras shrink just from wearing them. Could that be because I tend not to wear them when it's hot enough to sweat under the hat?
I'm thinking of ordering a Fed IV (standard Imperial fur). Hats Direct (and various Lounge posts) note the Fed IV runs about a half-size smaller than marked. So HD suggests ordering up a size.
I tend to stretch all my Akubras a bit to give them a slightly more oval shape. In view of that, do...
What tools have you been collecting? Re-shaping your own hat is fun, isn't it? Wearing a lid you've customized with your own hands makes it extra special. NONE of my dozen hats are the shape they arrived in -- I re-do all of them (some several times!).
To walk the dog this morning, I decided to wear this hat (I converted from an Akubra Bobby) and Levi's jacket, as a salute to Raylan Givens and the great TV series JUSTIFIED, which had its series finale Tuesday night.
For any fans of the great and just-ended TV series JUSTIFIED, spoilers follow, so you may not want to read this post until you see the finale.
One spoiler was a surprise: Raylan's silverbelly Stetson doesn't survive. The show did an amusing twist on The Hat, and here's actor Timothy...
I agree with the opinions that on a beautiful, tall hat like yours a wider band seems to go better. Tall crown just strikes me as a bigger canvas for a band that's got some size and swagger to it. A narrow band or ribbon just seems to get lost against that expanse of fur-felt!
I kinda liked...
If there's no safe, clean spot to rest a hat, I'd rather keep it on my head or go put it back in the car.
I don't think I'd want it on my lap to catch crumbs and spills. And I wouldn't want it to get knocked off an insecure resting place and onto the floor.
Sometimes ( * sigh * ) we just have...
One more vote for Sam at EA. He's very good at replying to e-mails by the next business day. And on a couple of occasions, he happily shot photos and e-mailed them to me to show me how different colors compared side-by-side.
I don't have a Snowy River (I was tempted, but the crown seemed a little low for me). But I do have 11 Akubras (10 western, 1 fedora) and all fit well (allowing for small variations in off-the-rack sizing).
I've replaced the hatbands/ribbons on all of mine, and found them easy to remove with...
Akubra Pro 30X Discontinued
Just found out from Sam Menche at Everything Australian that Akubra is dropping their Pro 30X western hat from their catalog lineup. I guess not enough sold. I'd been seriously considering getting one, so I should probably thank Akubra for eliminating this...
Hi, Rodolfo --
I'm sure you'll love them all! I just finished turning my recently arrived Akubra Arena into this "gambler" style. Went from a very tall cattleman crown and 4" brim to a 4.25" telescope crown and 3 3/8" brim. This is also my first attempt at adding a pencil curl to the brim...
