    Roadtrip

Some cars had a thing you could fill with ice and put next to the window to help keep you cool.

    When you're not dressed vintage...

I wear the hated jeans, shorts, t-shirts, tennis shoes and chukka boots. But everything fits, nothing is shabby, and everything is right for my coloring and figure. Snazzier clothes would be over-the-top around here.

What we've lost since the Golden Era

Visitors often ask me if my wooden, rotary phone works. [huh] "Uh, yes...does your phone work?"

What we've lost since the Golden Era

I was speaking of normal, everyday life. Yes, there are situations where the claws and fangs need to come out, but say, driving to work isn't one of them. I don't know how troops on WWII were trained, but in my day, we were trained to calmly and quickly take orders and perform our duties...

weight gain options, yes you read it right

Normal muscular weight gain on women tends to look athletic and toned, not like East German athletes from some decades ago. Many of them were on steroids. If you want to build muscle, use a program that involves heavier weights and fewer reps. Dinky little two-pound weights won't do it.

What we've lost since the Golden Era

Fletch, you're talking about meanness. I'm sure it's always been around, and generally, there's no need for it. I wholeheartedly agree that it's miserable to be around. I'm talking about having a quiet, peaceful, pleasant mind without harming anyone else. I can't depend on someone else give...

weight gain options, yes you read it right

Two words: starch and sugar. It wasn't the hamburger, it was the bun, fries and sugary drink that went with it. I think if you wanted to go the healthier Jack Lalanne route, though, you'd avoid sugar, lift weights and repeat, "If man made it, don't eat it. If it tastes too good, spit it out."

What we've lost since the Golden Era

Hmmm. A lot of my stress went away when I started doing this stuff for myself. Wait for someone else to do it, or give you approval, and you could be waiting a lifetime. Maybe it's always been so. That, and I just won't hang around negative people. If I have to deal with one, I talk about...

What we've lost since the Golden Era

I've heard that's typically the case when a minor is the victim of a crime, and I'm sure it's true. There are far more opportunities to be harmed by someone they're frequently around. In another era, there were many more kids roaming neighborhoods and probably many more adults at home who would...

    Learning to Dance

Frustrated? Not Progressing? Read This. Sometimes dancers get to a certain level and stop progressing. This situation has various causes. Of course, if you keep doing the same thing you've been doing, you'll get the same results. You'll often hear "practice, practice, practice." This is...

What we've lost since the Golden Era

We used to have cops on bikes around here in the summer--I'm not sure if we still do. Being close to the police station, we can get a cop here in minutes. (I called one once when it sounded like a domestic fight was getting out of hand.) We're also blessed with quite a few retirees and...

What we've lost since the Golden Era

Being in a "nice area" doesn't provide any protection at all. Where I grew up (near Columbine High School) there were a number of child killings over the years: 11-year-old Michelle Conley at the Pinehurst Country Club, a kid at Deer Creek Jr. High murdered by a classmate, young employees at a...

What we've lost since the Golden Era

My great-grandfather and his sister (who accidentally shot him) were around five years old. They were playing in an abandoned house and found pistols loaded with black powder charges. My brother Marvin and his friend were 15. Our father has been an avid hunter most of his life, so I assume...

What we've lost since the Golden Era

It can be really dangerous for kids to play unsupervised. My niece's daughter was molested--on several occasions--as a little girl when my niece let her play outside, in the front yard, unsupervised. (Did I mention my niece has the common sense of a bowl of Cocoa Puffs?) My brother was shot...

What we've lost since the Golden Era

One of my high school teachers said a student objected to his calling the students "people." As in, 'People, open your books to page 211." The teacher said he wondered what the student would have done if he'd called them "maggots."

I remember reading in Warren Buffett's biography that air conditioning changed the textile industry. It allowed fabric to be made more cheaply in the South and overseas than in New England.
