The jacket I'm considering is a black Royale, and it's not available in CXL.....which is reasonable, as 1930s/40s British jackets were not made in heavy leathers. I might have to go for the black jerky (though it didn't fare well in water resistance tests, surprisingly) or mid-weight black steer...
It does sound a bit like it. I've been busy researching "teacore" leathers and i have to admit I am a little put off by some of the things I've read. Basically I would like a black leather jacket that after several years of hard wear starts to show brown rather than grey undertones but is still...
done it a few times in the machine, not sure I'd do it again though. Subjects were all fisherman sweaters: a Shetland flecked "Shaela" , a Le tricoteur guernsey, and (gasp, why did I risk it) a genuine Staithes pattern hand-knitted fishermens gansey.
Instead of the wool wash at 40, I put them...
I hate carrying things that won't fit in my pockets. And I hate holding my hand up in the air for long periods of time!
I honestly wouldn't want to spend nearly a grand on a leather jacket that wasn't water resistant. Especially as it seems to rain more often than not round here!
Mind you, i...
Peacoat, you're right. When i wrote the above I had the idea the Battered seal Horse and battered tan horse were FQH, but of course they are mid-weights. Still thicker than the other leathers tested, and a lot more water resistant - still holding out after half an hour when I gave up! Very...
Thanks chaps. I did see the Thurston post with the two jackets side by side and I honestly couldn't see much of a difference. I'll give it another look though, maybe on my phone which has sharper colours than my laptop.
What I'm hoping is that the brown will only show through as it wears -...
A simple question, though i suspect I might not get a simple answer!
The sample i have from Aero is .....well, black. Defo not brown. In fact in blind comparisons I chose it as "blacker" than the black vicenza. But I see from some comments on the web others seem to detect the brown basecoat...
I have incidentally, repeated my experiment...
FULLER TEST 2 at 15oC, 52%RH. ALL SAMPLES WELL SPRAYED WITH SPRAY BOTTLE, water immediately beaded
Black jerky 2: all droplets soaked-in by 5 minutes
Oil Pull Horse: 6 minutes
Dark seal Vicenza: 7 minutes
Black Vicenza: 8 minutes
Seal...
thanks for that Rocketeer, I take it as a ringing endorsement for FQHH! Also good old Blackpool, a place I know well (six years of band practices there for one thing)
got to admit there were a few surprises.....the battered steer looks and feels veg tanned to me, but it performed remarkably well if so, and in both tests. The very different results between the different jerky horse samples (and between the same sample in two tests) also took me by surprise...
Well I did this for my own purposes but i thought you guys might be interested in the results.
I have a good number of Aero leather samples in the house (I expect I'm not alone) and thought I'd do some crude experimentation on water resistance. Here's the results: some of it expected, some of...
indeed it was, I was a teenager in the UK during the 60s (10 in 1960) and "greaser" was a common term for rockers. But IIRC it was more a term other people applied to rockers rather than a self identification. There was also the term "greebo" which i presume was short for "greaser boy".
hi Edward, sorry for the late reply, I don't visit the lounge very often nowadays.
By in person I mean visiting the workshop. Easy for me as I only live a couple of miles away on a direct bus route! I think I paid about £85 at a time when the website was quoting £125, and I was asking for a...
I have a Royale on order in the battered seal steerhide. I tried one on in the showroom (too large) and though I can't compare it to the Vicenza it was definitely as soft, light and flexible as you could want. As far as insulation goes, it is the lining that really counts. In my experience there...
I visted in September to order a Royale when on my way up to Skye. Nearly ended up in Tesco but found a proper cafe down one of the side streets that lead to Tesco. Phew! We went from Edinburgh on the re-opened Borders railway, the fare was cheap, the journey quick, the scenery great. The...
I have one of these which I got on evilbay a couple of years after production. I think they were made sometime around 2002-4. Mine is the non-distressed version which came with a painting on the back. Actually, they were slightly distressed, but only just enough to avoid looking new. The...
