Still chilly here today so sticking with the felt. My great-great-grandfathers Dobbs. He was never without his hat and this was probably the last he ever purchased. Once again from Stern Brothers in Parkersburg, WV sometime late 50's. And once again with his initials W.E.S. inside. Found it in a...
I stumbled on this Boater last summer in a local antique store. Was purchased originally at Stern Brothers Dept Store in Parkersburg, WV. Owners initials R.W.C. can be seen inside. Anybody have any ideas on it's age? The store it came from closed sometime in the late 1950's. thanks!
Same here when it comes to thrift stores, garage sales and antique stores. Here's my latest purchase from a local antique store last summer. Even though it's way too small for my gord, still love it. Notice the original owner initials R.W.C. Any idea how old it must be?
This Akubra Kiandra is my latest find. Purchased last fall at The Mad Hatter in Savannah, GA. With the recent cold temps had to hang up the straw and dig the fur felt back out. Love this hat and love the shop on River Street. Extremely comfortable and a perfect fit at a 59cm aka 7 3/8.
Love it Moehawk! Especially anything that can be found in a thrift store. Had my straw out last week but today and over past weekend had to go back to felt! Came through Canaan Valley yesterday (Sunday) and still snow up on high ridge of Caban Mountain. brrrr!
Not a new member but been away for awhile. Glad to be back and really glad to stash my felt today and dig out the straw. It's spring time y'all and life is good!
I think you're probably right. I was checked by someone in a hat shop and pretty sure I'm a 7 3/8. Now my question is this... what makes the Whippet such a desirable hat? Why so popular by so many? Is it simply due to being a classic style?
without a doubt:
People Get Ready- The Impressions (1965)
Way Over Yonder- Carole King (1971)
or perhaps anything played "live" at Red's Lounge, Clarksdale, Mississippi!
There's not a good hat shop near me in Parkersburg. If there was I'd go try some on. Nearest is Columbus or possibly Kelley's Men's Shop in Charleston. But I now see a coupon for Hats in the Belfry for possibly another Biltmore? We'll see....... thanks again!
Thanks, I too thought it a pretty good deal right now. Don't particularly like hearing about a fitting problem. Is it running slightly larger or smaller than what you thought it should? Recently I purchased a Biltmore Presidential size 7 3/8 and the size was right on the money. Was going to...
Left my butterscotch Biltmore President lying on the bed upstairs where my brother-in-law saw it. He came down and quickly said, "love your hat and gotta get one for myself."
About a year ago I ordered a Biltmore Presidential in butterscotch from http://www.hatsinthebelfry.com/product/biltmore-presidential-bdf1596.html
First seeing it on the shelf and trying it on at National Harbor, Oxon Hill, MD.
Hats in the Belfry gave me great service and prompt delivery.
I purchased a Boater yesterday at an antique store. Probably from around 1950. Same ribbon as the one on top. But not same weave. To small for me to wear but just love looking at it hanging on the wall. Now thinking I'm gonna have to have a new one for spring. Damn the elitists and full speed ahead!
