Thanks Brad - nice sign! I have a few more questions. Did the price tag or reorder tag help with narrowing the dating at all for my hat? Why wouldn't my hat have the "Cavanagh Edge" designation on the sweatband? How common were the original buyers initials on the sweatbands of these hats and...
Thanks John - Resitols are such great hats I don't know why they aren't as sought after? Good for those of us that like them but still hard to explain? Is it really the name like was suggested in an earlier post?
I appreciate the replies! I dont now why I said early 50s for this one as Brad had already said 40s earlier.
Man, what a lid! There is something about Cavanaghs. I compared it to my two Imperial Stetsons from around the same period and it's at least as good and maybe even a little better.
Got the two fedoras I was waiting for - late 40s early-mid 50s age guess on each - more info over at Resistol Roundup and Cavanagh Club threads - happy as I can be. Amazing just how well made and beautiful hats were from this period!
Resistol -
Cavanagh -
Finally got my late 40s-early 50s Cavanagh Fedora - 1 15/16-inch sweat, 2-inch ribbon, 5 1/4-inch crown, cavanagh edge - not identified as such on the sweatband, size 7 1/2, looks like a 20.00 or 25.00 price tag? and sewn liner.
Cav edge looks ok to me - doesn't look or feel flattened at all.
Finally got the Resistol Fifteen Fedora - very heavy felt - probably the heaviest fedora that I own, sewn in liner, 1 7/8-inch sweat, 1 3/4-inch ribbon, 5 1/4-inch crown and Cavanagh edge.
I just got this for a trip back east to pack in the luggage. It's good to know that if it falls out of the plane that the hat will survive ( they dropped this out of a plane!)...
Thanks Brad, I know you have written this many times before but it's always good to see the latest knowledge about Cavanagh hats. It seems to me that I don't see many of the 1952-1960 liners. Is that your experience too?
John
I've always liked the G9 Baracuta Jacket made in England. Steve McQueen, James Dean and Elvis can't be wrong. Light weight, fashionable and looks great with a lid.
A not great photo.
randooch and rlk - I appreciate the replies.
randooch -the whole hat has a nice patina.
rlk- I'm wondering what was different before 1942 and after 1953 with Resistols? I have gone through a third of the Resistol Roundup but didn't see anything about dating? Is there another thread...
Bought this off ebay and I can't wait for it to arrive to share. I know Brad Bowers expressed some concern about the Cavanagh edge being ironed? but everything else looks pretty good to my untrained eye for an older Cavanagh hat? Is this hat 1940s-era?
More photos once I get it but here...
Older Resistol Fedora?
Won this on ebay. Probably paid too much but haven't seen a Resistol fedora that I thought was this old. Can't tell if there is a reed on sweatband or not? But there are patent numbers and the weirdly shaped O in Resistol both on liner and on band. I'm guessing early...
I bought the Cavanagh and the Resistol from noclevermoniker - one on a second chance and the other BIN - had to pull the trigger on both even though it has decimated my hat buying budget for months. Will post photos when they arrive. How often do you see an older Cavanagh and an especially an...
Apparently I'm going to buy everyone's share of Garands. I can't really put into words why I love the Garand so much. It just feels right and it fits me better than any other military rifle that I've tried and I've tried a lot. Also, I just shoot the lights out with one. However, you're...
