Sewn Liner
Gus Miller at Batsakes hat shop in Cincinnati sews in liners as well. He recently cleaned a vintage Resistol OR clone for me, inside and out. The original liner had long ago come loose (either unstitched or unglued) but when I got it back he'd very carefully stitched in the new...
Hmmm...
I wonder if we could convince somebody at Akubra to revive this tradition. I think it'd be cool to get a little miniature version of your hat as an order confirmation.
I forgot about cars
Don't get me wrong, I fully realize that hat decline was well underway in the 30s, and was due to innumerable causes. I just thought that TV's depiction of a hatless society might've played a part...Of course I could have the cart before the horse, and TV was simply...
Hats on TV
I've often thought that the rise of television and the decline of wearing hats must be linked. In a previous life I did some studies in TV production and I know that in most studios it's virtually impossible to light someone's face who's wearing a hat...the brim casts a shadow...
Gus plus another option
Hat Head - It's nice to see another Cincinnatian in the Lounge!:)
Gus is indeed a bit gruff at times. He certainly treated me that way the first time I walked in. But when I went in a second time, I brought in a vintage Stylepark fedora in need of his TLC...
Swing and a miss...
No luck on the Bluegrass Green Campdraft :eusa_doh: . Everythingaustralian.com sent me an email saying they could no longer get the Black, Moonstone and Bluegrass Green colors. Current choices are Mid Brown, Tawny Fawn, and Silver Belly. I opted for the Tawny Fawn, as I...
I did it
I couldn't resist any longer and I finally pulled the trigger on a Bluegrass Green Campdraft from Everything Austrailian. At less than $60 USD it was too good a deal to pass up. Now comes the three months of waiting...maybe if I'm lucky it'll get here in time for the holidays!
Agreed
I have to agree with the above. You've got great hats Johnny, and I had my eye on this one specifically, but you're opening bid was already out of my range. I'm glad you got what you wanted, but I think a lot of us would've rather had a chance to at least bid on it. I'm sure it...
Magnets
I've found good magnets at Lowes, Home Depot, almost any decent hardware store will have them. Good thing is they're pretty cheap, too. A couple of bucks will buy you about a dozen or more.
Magnets
I've had good luck with rare earth magnets. They're small, thin and really powerful. Just snip off the prong and epoxy one magnet to the back of the pin. Slip the other magnet under the ribbon or even inside the hat and you're pin stays in play without damaging ribbon or felt.
.
I've got nothing against the hat. I LOVE the hat. The hat is great. It's just ME that sweats like a pig. As I said, I've never found a summer hat that I couldn't sweat through. I need a summer hat that can take a beating, so panamas are just not for me.
Really?
Kevin -
Thanks for the post, that's impressive. I've never found a hat that I couldn't sweat thru in about 1 hour, but none of them stained so badly as this panama. I assumed that was a normal drawback to the straw.
Am I the only one who's had sweat stains on his panama?
In my experience...
Panama's are not for everyone, nor are the for everyday wear. I learned this the hard way.
I recently purchased a panama specifically to wear on my vacation out west to the Badlands of N. Dakota. I found one on ebay for less than $50 from a very reputable hatter, so I...
Stylepark
I have a vintage Stylepark fedora with the exact same binding. I rather like it. From the front with the brim down it looks like any ordinary thin bound brim. From the side or back you get a huge contrast with the wide under-binding. Very cool to me. Wear it with pride!
Off
I look at it this way...Hats were originally thought of as outer-wear, the same as an overcoat. So ettiquite says if it's not proper to walk around your office wearing your winter coat, then it's not proper to wear the hat, either.
