Blue behind
I did the whole shrink to fit thing with a pair of 501s back in college. Bought 'em at my size since they were a bit oversized to begin with, put 'em on and sat in a hot tub for 15 mins. Then wore them the rest of the day, dripping blue water everywhere I went.

Cav edge
That Cavanaugh started out at $10! I bid on it on the extreeeeeeeemely slim chance that it might get overlooked by the masses. I guestimate that hat is of 1940s vintage with that huge crown and what looks like a genuine cav edge.
Does that warrant a price over $300? I dunno...a...
Cavanaugh
Anybody from here grab this little beauty?

I was in the running for a while, but things quickly got too expensive for me!
Dobbs 5th Ave
I happen to have a Dobbs 5th Ave in dark grey that I'd be willing to sell.
It's probably an early 60's model...there's not dating, but the bit of price tag that's visible lists it's cost at $17.95, so I'm thinking 1960s.
The brim is an overwelt and is 2.25 inches. Crown...
Reed?
Maybe they were referring to the reed in the sweatband. The reeded sweatbands do keep a hat in it's general oval shape a little better than the non-reeded sweatbands...
Shrinkage
I have used the lamp trick to shrink a hat. I had a vintage stylepark hat which was in dire need of a new sweatband, a cleaning and a slight strech to better fit my 7 1/2 LO noggin. I took it to Gus Miller at Batsakes and he agreed to do it all for me for only $50. After the...
Hmmm.
Thanks everyone.
I'm hoping it's a Whippet, but I can't tell. I've not heard of the Ivy League model, but it looks NICE. I wish I could find a hat in that green color.
As soon as it arrives I'll give it a detailed once over and let everyone know what it is...Thanks again!

Now, does anyone know exactly what it is?
Dame = Lady
In this case, Dame does in fact equal lady.
In England, men are knighted and become "Sir". Women become "Dame" as in Dame Judy Dench. It also gives them the unofficial title of "Lady".
Why the term Dame became rude, I dunno...
Kid = Woman?
I've never heard that "Kid" was an affectionate term for a woman...I always assumed it was Rick's (Bogie's) acknowledgement of the obvious age difference between he and Ilsa....
Batsakes
The only hat shop in downtown Cincy is Batsakes, and your description of your experience there confirms that's where you were. I have had numerous dealings with the owner Gus Miller; some great, some not so great.
Gus is one of the few craftmen left in the hat business and he does...
Selentino
I have a Selentino fedora. The felt is thick but soft and seems to be pretty hearty. It's well made and all fur felt. My only dislike is that it's crown is rather short and tapered, and just doesn't seem to look right now that I have a high, straight crown in my Campdraft.
For me, that's impossible.
I've gotta really high domed head.
No matter how I bash my hats, they ALWAYS touch the top of my head. Enen my new Campdraft, which has the highest unbashed crown (5.5 - 6.0 inches) out of all my hats, still touches my head when I put any sort of bash in it.
Stuck to my head
I've had challenges with the plastic dome liner on my hats sticking to my bald head as well. I've got a large domed head and no matter how I bash them, ALL hats touch the top of my head. I'd take my hat off and the entire liner would turn inside out and hang out of my hat...
It depends...
It all comes down to how patient and stingy you are.
If you've gotta have the hat ASAP, you can't go wrong w/Hats Direct, but they are a little more $$ than Everthing Australian.
I ordered mine thru Everything Australian because it was 1/3 the price (delivered) vs Hats...
Holes
When I was a boy I found one of my grandfather's old hats, an OR with what looked like a bullet hole in brim. When I quizzed my grandmother about it she told me that Pappa always handled his hat by the brim, never by the crown. After years of on and off handling, he's actually worn a...
