A couple of fashion pet peeves...

I carried a briefcase early in my career and had no issues. In fact it was a going-away gift from my staff one time. But since I started traveling every week, I find a non-structured, minimally padded computer bag I can hang on my shoulder to be much more convenient. It expands for my lunch or a...

A couple of fashion pet peeves...

In Wisconsin the latch-key kids would be at the bus stop in a tee-shirt and shorts when it was 20 degrees. That they survived is evidenced by painting themselves green and being filmed in the stands at a GreenBay football game.

A couple of fashion pet peeves...

I can appreciate a backpack, but its gotten out of hand. Try to board a plane or sit in an aisle seat when others board with a backpack larger than a full size carry on. I've been wacked in the head more times than I can count. Its not unaware, they just don't care - its their right to be obnoxious.

    My Finest ART DECO Item

For all of you who have followed my napkin ring thread in this forum, you know I appreciate hallmarked English sterling - early 20th century. I picked up this beautiful deco sterling locket for my daughter for Christmas and inserted a picture of her 3 mo. old daughter, my only grandchild. I had...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

Came up behind a fellow at a stoplight and when it turned green he just sat there. My dad would say "What are you dong, waiting for a color you like?"

Similar, but German. I guess there's only so many ways you can make them.

    The 80s, myth and reality?

In my world, the 80's were known for only one thing.... Super Bowl XX. The 1985 Chicago Bears destroyed the New England Patriots! A Refrigerator has never been so popular, nor Sweetness or a Samurai or Da Coach; and there was only one dance! ...and our personal favorite: "The one thing...

    Loungers' Pets

I guess it can be a random mutation, but the literature - including humans - trends toward an inheritable trait. Your puppy is really cute!

Yeah... the visual would kill it.

Adventure! Fedora Lounge Folks in Action!

It was a hot day in the outback. Sorry, the trees block the view of me skinny dipping.

    Loungers' Pets

So here are my two knuckleheads... Bermuda and Luna. Luna's eyes are two different colors (heterochromia iridis) - myth has it she can see heaven and earth at the same time and others say she can see into the spirit world (same basic myth). Regardless, they're my buddies! BTW... they're...

    Chronic Illness

Permanent kidney failure needing dialysis.... I had the privilege of spending a half hour today with a young man my son-in-law's age who's wife was in the OR donating her kidney to her mother. His father-in-law was there and described his wife's (the mother's) year on dialysis as "watching her...

    Your favorite movie quotes

D-Day: We have an old saying in Delta House: don't get mad, get even. Animal House 1978 Oops... forgot I posted this in 2014. It's still my favorite quote.

    Chronic Illness

You're right, as in most things in life, location matters. This was my experience. I guess I'm fortunate that my role may offer better access. Perceptions do make and burn reputations. Thanks for the comment.

    Chronic Illness

All the above makes for a great long read - this is why I enjoy the Lounge so much. Allow me to go against the flow and say something positive about the VA... I've been in a 5-year NIH-spnsored study of dual therapy for a common chronic condition. I was enrolled at the Cincinnati (OH) VA and...

    Families of the Lounge

One quick grandpa brag photo... mom (my daughter on right) and granddaughter on left. I guess I shouldn't be surprised my wife kept the outfit for 30 years. They're two months old. All the best for the holidays to my Lounge friends!

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

Several years ago I watched a beautiful light oak upright reduced to firewood. The craftsmanship was exceptional. I wish I had a huge warehouse and could adopt these beauties. Though at my age I'd need a college football team to haul them.

Vintage Things That Will NOT Disappear In Your Lifetime

I'm not so sure fluorescent tubes will last through the next round do-ggoders-for-the-environment. Given that they contain a minuscule amount of mercury and are classified as a toxic waste, they'll need to go. Who would have thought you can't buy normal 110W incandescent light bulbs anymore...

    Terms Which Have Disappeared

If you come from Chicago, you know the meaning of "to get downtown? Just go that way (East) till your hat floats". Although pretty soon you won't use that till Spring. As my dad said: "gotta run, my eye teeth are floating".

What Did You Drink Last Night?

JW Blue - It was on the back-bar, behind the Dewers at the Metropolitan Club in Covington, KY (across the river from Cincinnati). Black-tie event for the 50th anniversary of the Univ. Cincinnati Transplant Program. Great cocktail hour with old friends; not so great program. OK dinner. In all...
