D-Day: We have an old saying in Delta House: don't get mad, get even.
Animal House 1978

Oops... forgot I posted this in 2014. It's still my favorite quote.

⇧ a classic in a movie filled with classic quotes.

I love when Rick is looking at Stasser's dossier of him and Rick overly nonchalantly says - after Strasser has tried to intimidate Rick with the information in it - "Are my eyes really brown," which, I believe only sounds like English but is actually the German words for "drop dead Stasser, you don't scare me."

There's a line from Robert Young in one of his early movies, when he was quite the matinee idol (in competition with Robert Montgomery, I think). A young woman tells him he looks good. He replies *something on the order of* "Thanks, I just had myself detailed."

Now I know that can't be the exact line, as the term "to detail" -- a car, usually -- is a fairly recent coinage. He might have said, "I just had myself steam-cleaned," or "dry-cleaned" (the most likely choice, I believe), or "polished and waxed." Not sure. Does anybody recall the scene and film?
Could the line be "I just had myself Simonized"? It would be funnier. I haven't seen the picture, just trying to guess what would be funny in the thirties.

The wrong end of Nebraska . . . .
Had to think about it. I think it would either be Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

In my opinion, still the greatest insult in film...from Casablanca:

Ugarte: "You despise me don't you?"

Rick: "If I gave you any thought, I probably would."

Here is one of my favorites from National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.
Uncle Lewis: To Aunt Bethany: "You couldn't hear a dump truck driving through a nitroglycerin plant."

In my opinion, still the greatest insult in film...from Casablanca:

Ugarte: "You despise me don't you?"

Rick: "If I gave you any thought, I probably would."

He fired out one insult after another in that movie. Yvonne is a quite attractive young woman whose advances he dismisses completely in this exchange:

Yvonne: Where were you last night?
Rick: That's so long ago, I don't remember.
Yvonne: Will I see you tonight?
Rick: I never make plans that far ahead.

And then there's this one where Rick is recounting to Laszlo how Laszlo's wife came to his apartment last night to get the letters of transit and how he, Rick, took her up on her offer of sex in exchange for the letters. It's truly an unbelievable exchange, especially Laszlo's response to learning his wife just whored herself to Rick for the letters:

Rick: What you didn't know was that she was at my place last night when you were. She came there for the letters of transit. Isn't that true, Ilsa?
Ilsa: Yes.
Rick: She tried everything to get them and nothing worked. She did her best to convince me she was still in love with me but that was over long ago. For your sake she pretended it wasn't and I let her pretend.
Laszlo: I understand.
Rick: Here it is. [hands the letters to Lazlo]
Laszlo: Thanks. I appreciate it. Welcome back to the fight. This time I know our side will win. Are you ready, Ilsa?

My how sophisticated everyone is. "Hey, I banged your wife in exchange for your freedom." "Check, thanks buddy."

But possible the best roundhouse to the jaw in the movie comes from Renault in this exchange with Strasser:

Strasser: I strongly suspect that Ugarte left the letters of transit with Mr. Blaine. I would suggest you search the cafe immediately and thoroughly.
Renault: If Rick has the letters, he's much too smart to let you find them there.
Strasser: You give him credit for too much cleverness. My impression was that he's just another blundering American.
Renault: You mustn't underestimate American blundering. I was with them when they "blundered" into Berlin in 1918.

Something jarred this classic out of my memory today:

From the movie "The Fugitive"

Dr. Richard Kimble: I didn't kill my wife.

Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard: I don't care.

Those three words say so much - I'm not your judge / I'm just doing my job (and I'm going to do it).

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but with the signing of the Armistice, the armies went home, I think. Was there an Anglo-French-American military incursion into Berlin? Those with clearer memories, assistance please. (Of course, it could be Hollywood ignoring history for the sake of repartee...)
