Carmel, Indiana is thick with stores and malls and cars and people. I wonder, too, what people need to constantly buy, besides groceries, once they set up their household. I made a few trips to Target when I first moved here; the last trip was to buy a coffee maker to replace the one that was 80...
The stuff I've gotten from Walmart usually had to be returned, and I had to stand in line for 30 minutes to do so. I go to Target or the Family Dollar.
I planted Kentucky Wonder green beans along the chain link fence between my place and my neighbor's. Along the sidewalk, I planted moonflower and white morning seeds by the fence. I want to turn the chain link fence from a bug into a feature.
Yes, that's a beautiful building--it's across from the same stretch of park that borders Brookside.
The Indianapolis central library (downtown):
The Denver downtown library is shown here and here. And yes, those really are the most flattering pictures I found. Blech!
Serious restorations!
2007 v. 2015 near Woodruff Place.
There was construction--both new and rehabbing houses--up and down this street when I visited last year. Link shows 2009 v. 2011--lots more work done there since then.
Massachusetts Avenue at the start of the cultural trail. Volunteers...
IMO, the place with the best bones on the east side is Brookside Park. There's a large park--108 acres--with woods and iconic architecture. The northwest side of the neighborhood sits on a crest overlooking the park and the area is full of set-back sidewalks and craftsman, Tudor revival and...
Vintage Policing
Some neighborhoods in Indianapolis are going to be getting vintage policing: cops walking a beat. Residents wanted police officers to get to know the good, the bad and the troubled people in a neighborhood. Those areas are in the most need of crime reduction.
Nicer...
I got a cheap flip phone to have while moving across the country. I'm glad I did, but my mother and a friend here started constantly calling me. Once I quit answering the cell phone and started using my landline to take calls--you know, talking on the phone when I wasn't supposed to be working...
I started to hate being available at all hours when I had a pager in the Air Force. I had to be available to photograph things like crime scenes, but mostly it was stupid stuff like cars hitting deer. I figured out early on I didn't want to be working weekdays PLUS weekends and evenings. I also...
A nice place, and good for your balance sheet. Low costs, and not many normative cues to run out and buy a Navigator or a $500 purse or even a dishwasher. And hiking in the forests nearby restores me in a way that the Rockies never did.
Taxes:
7% sales tax.
Flat state income tax of 3.3%.
Property taxes are constitutionally capped at 1% of property values for homesteads (owner occupied), 2% for other residential property and farmland, and 3% for all other property. (Taxes also cover trash pick-up.) My property tax was well...
I did admin work in Denver, and it's a field that's going downhill in general. Employers are either paying less than they were several years ago, or they expect you to do a lot more work. There were some admin jobs available here where I could have made within 15% of what I was making before...
The only things I do differently here regarding safety are having an alarm system and not walking to the drug store at 10:30 pm. I'm not taking a position on whether to have a gun, just stating what the law is here. Everything else is a pretty standard precaution even in a fairly safe place like...
Here's a tale of two cities. Until Thanksgiving week last year, I lived in my hometown of Denver, Colorado. Just to clear up a few misperceptions, Denver is on the plains (not in the mountains), gets roasting hot in the summer, the traffic is as bad as anything I've driven in in Los Angeles, the...
Another daughter of hoarders here. A day came a few years ago when my mother's electric wheelchair quit working and I went to her house and helped her into another wheelchair. The second wheelchair was too wide to fit in the paths through the clutter in the house. I had to clear a wider path so...
