I have seen dry cleaners offering specialty suede cleaning do a great job on some of these, steam cleaning away black grit and grime, but I have also used cleaning agents. Please note that nothing I say here is advice or intended as instruction; it is posted only to tell a story about how I...
I recall seeing your B-3 before and it's a super piece! If I recall, the outdoor pics of this show the facings on sleeves to be a pale color that is pretty much matching the original shade, which is a very light shade of creamy tan with some very pale pinkish hues on some examples, and not the...
I do see what you are saying and I agree this is very suspect. The only way to be sure is a thorough hands-on exam, with all do attention to the possibility something fishy has transpired with the sleeve length(s).
I saw that, too, but the positioning may be impacting what we see. Looking at the sleeve ends where the top stitching can be seen on both sleeves, they seem to show no evidence of alteration, but a close exam of these areas and where the sleeves are sewn into the body should be made to be sure...
I have pics of the one I owned - the only I've ever seen in the flesh and it was NOS unworn - but, alas, I need to get the medium-format transparencies drum scanned and digitized.
You had me all stirred up, my friend! That's a D-1 made by the San Antonio Air Depot and not a 1937 first run. I've never seen one from the first run (mechanic items are very, very scarce due to attrition), but these would have been made w/ raw, off-white skins and not core-seal-coated skins...
You nailed the buckle use down, Xopher - congrats!!!
RMNZ, RMJP, and, in 2004, Buzz Rickson's are the only repro makers I know of that made these early B-3's as depicted on the Ebay listing you kindly noted here. I regret not buying the BR version in 2004, which has a slim chance of being...
Thanks, Andrew; of course your exposure to such rare AAC items would be limited in your neck of woods, and this type of gear is pretty limited even here, I just happen to go back far enough and I'm obsessive enough in this field of study to have turned up a vast amount of info. that's not...
This is a USN M-422A from WWII, not a G-1, thus more scarce and desirable. The zipper and knit parts are replacements from well after WWII, and the label with care instructions has been hand sewn and added after WWII, too. There should be evidence of a stenciled "USN" painted to the back of...
I've seen the chest buckle on at least three other productions: Phillips Tanning, Werber, and SFAD. Images of the former two, unfortunately, exist in my photo study only in chromes shot back in the '90's, but the SFAD, which I didn't handle personally, is shown here from an Ebay auction that...
That is a nice one, Xopher! I've owned and handled quite a few of these and I think this one would clean up really well. I wish they depicted the data label so as to show the contract number. This is worth more than the opening bid to anyone who is serious about collecting these items. Thank...
There you go! Awesome photo: Indeed, two Luftwaffe 10-30 B-1 Schwimmwesten! The B-1 production was early, as evidenced by the metal tip on the rubber inflation tube, which was converted to a plastic mold in the B-2 model to preclude the freezing metal from sticking to or burning the lips at...
Superb photo! Yes, the pilot is wearing a 1st-model RAF "C" helmet, AAF B-7 googles and A-14 ox. mask with the special RAF-AAF wiring, but I'm sorry to disagree on this: the life vest is RAF and not Luftwaffe. Please note the extreme differences between the two and the telltale signs on this...
Hello, Kowalski!
Wow, that brings back memories!!! Somewhere deep in our dusty archives I could find the buyer's name and date of purchase, but that could take days I don't have to spare right now. I think this was purchased in 1996, but it could be 1997.
I have no idea of the value of...
It's an older ELC RW 1401 A-2 made from russet goatskin. The zipper is a repro but the slider is vintage. This A-2 could be from the original series of limited-edition RW 1401 A-2's we offered up until fall '97. If you look inside the sleeve lining, most likely on the right sleeve, there may...
Size 44 in the Buzz Rickson U. S. Navy Khaki N-1 Heavy Deck Jacket, Non-Stenciled HPA Edition has now sold out, so we'll have no more until fall 2017 unless someone returns one and assuming Buzz Rickson's offers this again next year. All other sizes, including the HPA-only size of 46 are still...
