Yes, cant reinforce the leather more. Cloth and grosgrain will absorb the sweat and ruin the ribbon and weave with salt and water stains - sweat basically. Leather all the way
Its a little trickier than felt, in that the fibers could be brittle and shellac may act strangely to steam. Play around a little, but when you feel the limit is reached, call a hatter promptly!
