Another option
You might consider this Borsalino Nomad with 2.25" brim:
http://www.noggintops.com/page.cfm?p=97
Noggintops is discontinuing it, so it's marked down from 150 to 100, and if you use the code 20OFF that will bring it down to 80 bucks, a steal for a Borso. Might not be your...
Thanks, and yep
the Douglas is great - I'm on the fence about buying one or having a VS custom hat made in that style, with the crown shortened to my liking. It doesn't help that Miller has a no refund policy, I'm just not sure I can pull off a tall crown. Decisions, decisions...
Suggestions
Here's a few suggestions based on your wish list

Really nice but has a bound edge, Miller Douglas...
This might work
Here's an inexpensive wool fedora, comes brown in small which is maybe 1 size too big - VHS will include foam strips to help the fit, just ask, plus it will be useful a little longer as he grows into the size:

Thanks
Thanks for the specs - I'm not sure I can go 5" tall on the crown, but your hat in gray with a shorter crown is first on my mental drawing board. Enjoy...
Reuse or burn
If possible, reuse the fuel - I seem to remember my dad pouring white gas through a fine mesh sieve before it went into the Coleman stove. Elsewise, I would bet that it's better to burn the fuel than let it evaporate. One of the main combustion products is H2O, so at least some...
Sweet lid - dimensions?
Scott, that hat is really sweet, particularly the crease. I like the felt/ribbon color combination in a big way also. Could you tell me the brim width and crown height on it? Thanks, Carl
My pleasure
Glad to help - I didn't say so before, but the hat brush was $7.75, sponge $3 and spot remover $4 - seems less than most places - don't know what shipping costs would be, though. Hey, I was saving money by buying all those supplies, right? The hat jones has apparently taken...
Thanks for the info
Thanks for the info - one of the problems with the hat I have is that the sweat is pretty dry feeling. I'm afraid to turn it out fully, as I feel it may crack or pop stitches. I think I'll use the finger-bowl approach described above with some plastic film behind the band...
Another question
I've asked this on several threads, but no answer yet - will Lexol stain the felt if I make a mess while treating the sweat band?
Also, can I use it on leather car seats?
Carl
Could be worse
I had a girlfriend once upon a time who tried to dye her red hair black and wound up with a dark shiny green color - sort of like the Riddler's daughter - she went blonde soon after...
Actually, I don't know how it looks in person, I kind of like the purple - it could go over...
New old-style stretcher
OK, I went by Manhattan Wardrobe on Friday and picked up some hat stuff. It's a great place that caters to the theater world - lots of backstage stuff, clothing steamers, sewing stuff, stage blood, etc. - pretty much fun to look around. My haul for the day is shown here...
Hat retainer
I saw the Hat Retainer at Manhattan Wardrobe Supply yesterday for $22
http://www.wardrobesupplies.com/store/m2_mjsupp.html
which is a lot less than on the company site.
While there, I bought a new old-style stretcher (for a lot more $) and am uploading some photos now, will post...
Using Lexol
I just picked up some Lexol NF Neatsfoot formula. Do you treat both sides of the sweat band, or just the part that touches your head? Any opinions on the best way to put it on without getting it on the felt? I'd turned the band out, but it's really dry and I don't want to crack or...
Nice job
Nice job with the bash, Roadrunner - glad you picked it up, it looks good. You make me wish I'd bought a Sydney as well. But I bought a hat stretcher today instead to fix up my old gray trilby, I plan to take some pictures of the process. I am toying with picking up a Stetson Chatham...
Will do
I also plan to stop by Manny's Millinery Supply which is not far away and is going out of business - I'll post what I find &/or buy in both places. Cheers
Yes, pics please
Hey jdbenson, I'd love to see some pics of the block you bought. I found these new old-style stretchers available in NYC:

I plan to check out the 4-way deluxe stretcher on Friday, but it sounds like the old gizmo you...
